Memo to bosses: don't bring workers back to offices too quickly or risk a revolt

MONTREAL --
While Quebec's rules requiring many people to work from home could be coming to an end in a matter of months, one lawyer believes employers should think twice before having them come back to the office.
The re-opening plan presented by Premier Francois Legault calls for the resumption of face-to-face work conditions towards the end of August, assuming vaccine coverage continues to increase and the epidemiological situation continues to improve. However, if all goes according to plan, the majority of Quebec's regions will be reclassified as yellow zones on June 14, which would make teleworking optional for administrative and clerical tasks.

$10 a day child care for Canadian families

OTTAWA, ON, April 21, 2021 /CNW/ - Too many families in Canada lack access to affordable, inclusive, and high-quality child care. This is an economic issue as much as it is a social one. Without access to child care, parents – especially women – cannot fully participate in the economy, and the global COVID-19 pandemic has brought these issues to the forefront. As part of our commitment to support a recovery that brings all Canadians along, the Government of Canada wants to ensure that quality and affordable regulated child care spaces are available to all families who need it.

Despite first deal with one union group, 73,000 Quebec teachers still planning April 27 walkout

MONTREAL --
While Quebec teachers unionized with one group will soon be asked to vote on their agreement in principle, the members of another major union are still planning a walkout on April 27 over their lack of a deal.
The 49,000 teachers unionized with the Autonomous Federation of Teachers, or the FAE, will be called upon, "in the coming weeks," to vote on the agreement in principle, which took one more step on Friday when it was ratified by their federal negotiating council.
The tentative deal has gotten some praise so far, from both sides. Quebec Minister of Education Jean-François Roberge described it as a "giant leap for the recognition" of teachers.

'Absolutely unacceptable': Rioters set fires, smash windows in Montreal curfew protest

MONTREAL --
Montreal police arrested seven people and continue to investigate after rioters smashed windows and set fires in Old Montreal during a large protest that took place in violation of the 8 p.m. curfew on Sunday evening.
A crowd had initially gathered in Place Jacques Cartier, chanting slogans such as "Freedom for the Young."
However, some present began setting fires in garbage cans and smashing windows of nearby storefronts. Riot police soon moved in, firing tear gas.

Premier's vision of universities as places for discussing difficult truths is in marked contrast to Quebec's high school history curriculum.

On Saturday, Premier François Legault stated that universities “should be places of respectful debates, uncensored debates, and truth seekers, even when truth can shock or provoke.” I agree — but it’s hard to have these debates when our high school students are being taught what is, in effect, a censored version of our country’s rich history.
