View Comments I left the house early on my first day at Glendale Community College, knowing my class was at 7:40 a.m. and I’d have to find it. My dad raised his coffee cup and wished me luck. I was the first person in my family to go to college. The campus was bigger than my high school. No bells rang, calling us to class. The students were of all ages. There was a smoking area. Anything seemed possible there. I found my class, Philosophy 101, on the opposite side of campus from where I’d parked. The professor had a scraggly beard and wore Birkenstocks. ....
View Comments Gov. Doug Ducey on Tuesday signed into law a bill to allow community college students to earn some bachelor s degrees without attending another higher education institution. All community colleges in the state can now offer four-year programs, but those in Maricopa and Pima counties have to complete a financial analysis and prove doing so would not duplicate existing programs at Arizona State University or the University of Arizona. Public universities can respond to community colleges that seek to add programs, but the new law does not allow a public university to prevent a community college from offering a baccalaureate degree. ....
UNION GROVE â Peter Hansen, a business owner who rose to the highest levels of Racine County government, is being remembered as a selfless public servant. Hansen, who served more than 30 years in local and county government, including as county board chairman and county executive, died April 27 at the age of 72 following a three-year battle with cancer. In recognition of Hansenâs years of service, county officials are considering renaming the County Board meeting room as the the Peter L. Hansen Racine County Board Chambers. Just two days before Hansen died, he was visited at his home in Union Grove by a whoâs who of Racine County politics, including County Executive Jonathan Delagrave, who told Hansen of the proposed renaming honor. ....
