Philippine lawmaker proposes military pension reforms

The Philippines’ government-funded military pension system faces a funding crisis that could drag down the economy, according to a lawmaker who is introducing legislation that proposes reforms, including requiring soldiers to contribute to their pensions.
Joey Salceda, chairman of the Ways and Means Committee of the House of Representatives, says the military and uniformed personnel pension system currently has a reserve deficit of 9.6 trillion pesos (US$200.27 billion). He says the system’s expenditure comes entirely from the national budget.
“This is a looming fiscal crisis. Without reforms, funding the pension scheme will become fiscally unsustainable, shrinking the economy by as much as 7.2% in the long run,” Salceda wrote on his Facebook account on May 5. ....
