.- Upon first seeing Jason Stewart’s new work, I thought of Filippo Brunelleschi’s facade of the Ospedale degli Innocenti, the foundling hospital in Florence that he was commissioned to design in 1419. The arches of the hospital facade have always captivated me. Brunelleschi’s arches are perfect in their form and progression: perfect graceful architecture. Why, I wondered, did that architectural image appear as I looked at the series of paintings called “Shaping Color”? The precision of Jason Stewart’s arcs in their spaces on canvas resonate with Brunelleschi’s architecture. The paintings seem to transpose geometric architectural form into pictorial space. Perhaps this geometry would seem to belie the dominance and importance of color in these paintings. Yet color holds the arcs; the arcs hold color. The more one looks at these works, the more one observes the paradox between color and f ....

.- On May 12, Bonhams sale of Post-War & Contemporary Art in New York will offer Untitled (1980) by Keith Haring (1958-90) and Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-88), the first collaboration between the two artists to ever appear at auction, and one of the only works created by these two giants of contemporary art together (estimate: $300,000-500,000).
Untitled comes directly from the collection of Samantha McEwen, who lived on Broome Street, New York City, with Keith Haring and his partner Juan DuBose from 1980 to 1983. This work on paper is an incredibly rare, visual conversation between Basquiat and Haring, and only a small handful of works by this pair are in existence. Untitled was recently exhibited in Keith Haring | Jean-Michel Basquiat: Cro ....

Children play on ruins of al-Kfeir in Syria, March 24, 2021. So many people have fled to Syria’s crowded northwest during the country’s 10-year civil war that families have settled in important archaeological sites. Ivor Prickett/The New York Times.

.- As the sun set, children in dirty clothes and battered shoes herded sheep past the towering stone walls of a Byzantine settlement abandoned more than 1,000 years ago, leading them into a nearby ancient cave where the animals would spend the night. Laundry hung near the semicylindrical wall of a ruined, centuries-old church. Vegetables grew between the remnants of two rectangular doorways ornamented with carved leaf patterns. Scattered about were giant cut stones from what had once been an extensive town. It was here, at the vast archaeological site of al-Kfeir, Syria, where Abu Ramadan and his family sought shelter more than a year ago aft ....
