DC Police Union says reform has hurt the department, but data suggests otherwise

The D.C. Council has taken steps to create more accountability in policing with recent police reform legislation, but the city’s police union says some of those changes have made it harder for officers to do their jobs.
Gregg Pemberton, chair of the D.C. Police Union, said that while he agrees with a majority of the provisions in the bill and does not oppose the release of some evidence in certain use-of-force cases, the release of officers’ names to the public is cause for concern.
“Officers whose names have been released have become the subject of some pretty serious threats,” said Pemberton.

(WASHINGTON) -- A police officer has been fired and three others could face charges and termination after they were allegedly caught on body-camera footage drag racing and crashing two squad cars on a narrow residential street in Washington, D.C., according to officials.
Acting Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee called the drag-racing incident "embarrassing" during a news conference on Monday, where he also announced a summer crime prevention initiative.
"Obviously, those types of things are unacceptable," Contee said when reporters asked him for an update on the incident. "It's certainly something that I do not tolerate as the chief of the Metropolitan Police Department."

Hackers Stole Info on Hundreds of DC Police Officers – NBC4 Washington

City officials did not disclose where those demands stand. Mayor Muriel Bowser said Thursday there is a process the city is following.
The leaked documents contain the officers’ Social Security numbers, home addresses, cellphone numbers, names of relatives, polygraph results, health and financial information, and more.
News4 reached out to the five officers, contacting two who declined to comment.
Brett Callow, a cyber threat expert, said Babuk is a new group of amateurish hackers working with inferior software but underestimating them would be a mistake.
“Organizations in this position really have no good option available to them,” he said. “Whether they pay or not, they’ve had the data breach, the cyber criminals have their data and they may reveal the data.”

Police say 25-year-old Noah Green rammed a blue Nissan Altima into USCP Officers Billy Evans and Kenny Shaver. Green then plowed the car into a reinforced steel barricade blocking his route to the Capitol, jumped out and wielded a machete. Officers shot and killed Green.

Noah Green, 25, was driving a blue sedan just after 1 p.m. on Friday when he entered the north gate on Constitution Avenue and rammed into two on-duty Capitol Police officers with the vehicle, the Metropolitan Police Department said in the new incident summary.
The suspect then drove his car into a barricade before he exited the vehicle armed with a large knife and “charged toward another United States Capitol Police Officer,” the summary stated.

A U.S. Capitol Police officer died and another was badly injured Friday when a man rammed a car into them at a barricade outside the U.S. Capitol, authorities said.
Two law enforcement officials told NBC News that, after striking the officers, the driver jumped out of the car with a knife and was fatally shot by Capitol police.
