Smith: Is the Line 5 showdown with Michigan all about the money?

Article content
We were all watching this week as the deadline approached for Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to make good on her threat to shut down Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline. We got an unintentional sneak preview of what would happen to Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada if that were to occur when the Colonial Pipeline was sabotaged in a cyber attack. It didn’t take long for states to declare a state of emergency and begin rationing. Even with the restoration of service, it will take days for gas stations to be restocked. That’s how quickly pipeline shutdowns are felt. ....

Vaughn Palmer: B.C. politicians consider extending taxpayer subsidies past 'expiry' date

Article content
VICTORIA  An all-party committee of the B.C. legislature is asking the public whether to continue the taxpayer subsidy for political parties that was brought in by the New Democrats four years ago.
The annual allowance has already paid almost $15 million to the New Democrats, B.C. Liberals and Greens. They are on track to collect a further $5 million by July 1, 2022, when the allowance expires unless extended by the legislature which is the question before the committee and the subject of virtual public hearings that start later this week.

Over the last month, former B.C. Premier Christy Clark and former Ministers Mike De Jong and Rich Coleman have spoken at hearings with the Cullen Commission, a team investigating the systemic reasons behind the rise of money laundering in B.C. casinos over the past two decades.
Clark, who was premier of the province from 2011 to 2017, told the commission on April 20 that she wasn’t aware of the issue until 2015.
She testified to answer the Commission’s inquiry into how much she knew about the increasing amount of suspected drug cash going into B.C. casinos if she recognized the money was increasing government revenue, and if she made any attempts to intervene. ....

Election speculation: Langley | The Cascade

Print Edition: August 25, 2011
There are no politics like BC politics, because BC politics don’t stop. The battle grounds for the next provincial election are being drawn, and Langley is looking to be the epicentre of a massive power shift. The UFV student body consists of (roughly) 20 per cent Langley residents, which means that when the next election does finally get into full swing, they are going to have a heck of a front row seat.
Right now, hitting the ground running and stirring things up on the political scene, is John Cummins. He’s the new leader of the recently resurrected BC Conservative party. He’s also loved by the NDP and hated by the Liberals as he stands a good chance of draining the far right-wing support. The Liberals have had the hard-line conservative vote since the early 90’s when the Social Credit party began to implode; them being the only appealing choice to turn to at the time. But now with the Liberals tanking in the polls, opportunities a ....
