Twenty-year-old Aji Piper was 15 when he became a plaintiff in a landmark lawsuit in which youths are suing the U.S. government on the grounds that it is continuing to allow climate-warming greenhouse gas emissions. With dozens of people killed by wildfires in the western U.S., millions of acres scorched and choking smoke spreading far into British Columbia, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee lit up the news wires in September. These are not just wildfires,” Inslee asserted at a press conference from Olympia, “these are ....

Prince George Free Press » Farmers on a diet

VICTORIA – Premier Gordon Campbell’s beach-blanket transformation to climate-change action figure is the stuff of legend now. Struck at once by the Maui sun and the revelations of George Monbiot’s book Heat: How to Stop the Planet From Burning, the premier flew home to plant the seeds of the carbon crusade that flowers this spring.
Now the same publisher, Random House, can take credit for inspiring another mythic green warrior in the B.C. cabinet. Agriculture Minister Pat Bell has leaped from his snowmobile to announce his own conversion, after reading The 100-Mile Diet, by Vancouverites Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon. ....

Prince George Free Press » NDP government would launch public inquiry into sale of BC Rail

An NDP government will launch an inquiry into the sale of BC Rail.
Leader Carole James said Premier Gordon Campbell broke a promise to the people of Prince George when the railway was sold.
“In 2001 Gordon Campbell came to Prince George,” she said to a crowd of about 150 people in Prince George Saturday. “He looked all of you in the eye and said he wasn’t going to sell BC Rail. Well Gordon Campbell broke his promise, He sold BC Rail.”
The sale resulted in a raid on the legislature and the case ending up before the courts.
“Every trail of that disgraceful story starts and stops in Gordon Campbell’s office.” She said. “We now know his campaign manager and his closest friend Patrick Kinsella received $300,000 of taxpayer money, and Gordon Campbell won’t tell us why.” ....

Prince George Free Press » Getting B.C. back to the land biggest farm fire

VICTORIA – The current wave of interest in climate change, food security and health is starting to open up new possibilities here in B.C.
There are signs that the steady urbanization of our society may be reaching its limits, as people pay unheard-of gasoline prices for the privilege of sitting in traffic jams. Health warnings on imported spinach and other vegetables are the latest reminder that we are squandering our natural wealth, eating California veggies while much of our arable land grows suburban lawns.
Land use is starting to change in urban areas. Not for much longer will people expect the best of both worlds, a big back yard and a mall five minutes away as the SUV flies. ....
