Awaiting Trial for Six years, UAPA Prisoner Dies While in Custody

Mumbai: A students’ rights activist from Chandrapur district, Kanchan Nanaware, who was arrested in 2014 for her alleged role in the Maoist movement, succumbed to a heart and brain ailment in the state-run Sassoon hospital in Pune. Nanaware was 38 years old and belonged to the Adivasi community.
Nanaware, who was born with a congenital heart illness, had developed a brain ailment in the past week. Her family and lawyers allege that neither the jail nor hospital authorities informed them till her brain surgery was conducted on January 16. ....

A coronavirus outbreak at Alaska’s largest prison is accelerating, with 110 inmates testing positive for the virus as of Monday.
Goose Creek Correctional Center first reported coronavirus cases among inmates on Nov. 2, when the Alaska Department of Corrections announced that 22 inmates and five staff members tested positive.
By Monday, the number had grown to 110 positive inmates, according to DOC spokeswoman Sarah Gallagher. As of Monday, the prison, an hour west of Wasilla near Point McKenzie, housed a total of 1,317 pretrial and sentenced prisoners.
The Goose Creek outbreak began in one of the prison’s housing units, known as mods. Each houses 64 prisoners. With more than 100 infected, the outbreak seems to have expanded beyond a single housing unit. ....

BALLIA: Two officials of the Ballia district jail in Uttar Pradesh have been suspended for laxity days after a prisoner fled from the prison, officials said here on Friday.
Jail warden Shiv Kumar and head warden Krishna Kumar Yadav have been suspended, Jail Superintendent Prashant Maurya said, adding that recommendations have also been sent to the government for action against two more officials.
A prisoner, Bechu Ram, had fled from the jail on January 4 after removing the iron rod of a window and scaling the wall.

Louisiana advocate for ex-inmates pardoned by Pres. Trump


NEW ORLEANS — Former President Donald Trump issued a late-night pardon to a New Orleans criminal justice advocate who was jailed as a teenager.
Now, the mistake that s haunted Syrita Steib for 20 years is officially a part of her past.
“I think I’m still trying to soak it all in,” Steib said Wednesday afternoon, just hours after learning she was pardoned from her criminal past.
Former New Orleans Saints player Benjamin Watson advocated for Steib’s freedom. Tuesday night, Trump pardoned Steib and 142 others, including New Orleans rapper Lil’ Wayne.
“Really, really thankful to God that he can use any vessel to bless you,” Steib said. ....

Colebrook couple indicted for child abuse


LANCASTER — A Colebrook couple were indicted last week on a charge of second degree assault: domestic violence and strangling a 3-month old infant last April.
Gerald F. Hope, 37, and Erica Weatherwax, 26, both of 9 Bridge St., Colebrook were indicted by a Coos County grand jury for abusing the baby.
The indictment and arrest affidavit allege Hope sprayed milk from a bottle directly into the baby’s mouth while the infant was lying on Weatherwax’s lap. The baby was “crying, choking and grasping for air.”
The indictment charged Weatherwax assisting by holding the baby and videotaping the incident with her cell phone. ....
