British Ambassador calls on Russia to release Crimean Tatar Kuku, all Ukrainian political prisoners

British Ambassador calls on Russia to release Crimean Tatar Kuku, all Ukrainian political prisoners
1 min read
British Ambassador to Ukraine Melinda Simmons has called on the Russian side to release a citizen of Ukraine, Crimean Emir-Usein Kuku, who has been in prison for five years.
Kuku is just one of at least 109 Ukrainian political prisoners unjustly imprisoned by Russia. Like many others, he has been held held in inhuman conditions and denied medical care. This cannot continue. I call on Russia to release Kuku and all Ukrainian political prisoners immediately, Simmons wrote on Twitter on Thursday.
Member of the British Parliament Wendy Morton also called on to release Kuku. A grim milestone today: Crimean Tatar human rights defender Emir-Usein Kuku marks five years in Russian detention after his politically motivated arrest in Crimea. Russia must end its persecution of Crimean Tatars and release Mr. Kuku at once, she wrote on Twitter. ....

STOP COVID unemployment benefits for prisoners and recoup billions in fraud

© Getty Images
The next COVID relief/reconciliation bill must include provisions to stop prisoners from filing fraudulent claims for unemployment benefits. Congress worked in bipartisan fashion with the previous administration to provide important unemployment benefits for workers who were unemployed due to no fault of their own. It was the right thing to do, to care for American families and sustain their income while sectors of the economy were shut down to flatten the curve and meet the unprecedented health care needs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Regrettably, some unscrupulous residents of federal and state prisons gamed the system, exploited the relaxed eligibility determinations, were put on state unemployment rolls, and received billions of dollars in fraudulent unemployment benefits. While many states had procedures in place to prevent such fraud by checking unemployment rolls against prison rolls, some states did not. ....

Taliban deny claims that freed prisoners have returned to battlefield

(Last Updated On: February 8, 2021)
Taliban spokesman Mohammad Naeem on Monday dismissed claims that 85 percent of the Taliban prisoners freed last year have returned to the battlefield.
“These remarks are not true … Kabul administration always make such remarks,” said Naeem, adding that some of the former inmates have been re-arrested without having committed crimes.

This comes after First Vice President Amrullah Saleh said on Sunday that 85 percent of the over 5,500 Taliban prisoners freed in accordance with the US-Taliban agreement last year had returned to the battlefield.

Saleh also said that many of them had been rearrested or killed by Afghan forces during clashes.  ....
