Curtis was born in Topeka in 1860, one year before the Kansas Territory became the 34th state. Around age three, his mother died and his father joined the Union Army to fight in the Civil War. He lived at various times with his non-Native paternal grandparents and his Native maternal grandparents, Louis and Julie Pappan Gonville, who lived on the Kaw reservation in Kansas. As a young boy, he became known for winning races as a horse jockey.
Around 1873, when Louis and Julie were moving with the Kaw Nation to the Indian Territory in the current state of Oklahoma, Curtis planned to go with them. But his grandmother dissuaded him from joining them. ....

Curtis was 1st cabinet member, VP of color | News, Sports, Jobs

DEAR EDITOR:
In your editorial, “Haaland’s nomination meaningful,” you stated that U.S. Rep. Deb Haaland, a Native American, would be the first to serve in a president’s cabinet, if confirmed as Interior Dept. Secretary in the Biden Administration.
I beg to differ. Vice President Charles Curtis, a mixed-race Kaw Indian / white from Kansas was the first to serve in a president’s cabinet, under Herbert Hoover; therefore, Deb Haaland will be the second person of color to serve in a president’s cabinet, and Kamala Harris will be the second person of color to be vice president. No first place there. Harris will be the first female vice president, though. ....

No, Harris will not be the first | News, Sports, Jobs

To the editor:
In your article “Reforming Relationships with our Native Indians” you mentioned that president-elect Biden is being urged to pick the first Native American Indian for his cabinet and that she would be the first Native American to serve in the cabinet.
I beg to differ. Vice President Charles Curtis, a mixed race Kaw-Indian/White from Kansas, was the first to serve in a president’s cabinet, under Herbert Hoover. Therefore, Kamala Harris will be the second person of color to be vice president.
This information came from an outstanding Government/American History class which required us to memorize the presidents and vice presidents, in order, along with the chief justices. My class essay was on Abraham Lincoln and his administrations. Are high school students being taught American government and history or is that left up to CNN, MSNBC and YouTube? ....
