San Francisco halts school-renaming plan after backlash, admits 'mistakes'


44 public schools with controversial names will not be renamed as the city focuses on reopening classrooms amid COVID-19; Claudia Cowan reports.
The San Francisco Board of Education is abandoning its plan to rename schools named after historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and George Washington until students and teachers are able to return to the classroom, board Commissioner Gabriela Lopez said on Sunday night.
I also acknowledge and take responsibility for mistakes made in the building renaming process. We need to slow down and provide more opportunities for community input – that cannot happen until AFTER our schools are back in person, Lopez wrote on Twitter. ....

OAKLAND, Calif. The San Francisco Board of Education voted Jan. 26 that 44 public schools, nearly a third of the total, would be renamed. Among the names of those to be canceled are poet Robert Louis Stevenson, abolitionist poet James Russell Lowell, Paul Revere and Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln.
