The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, a territory of the United States, is considering legislation that would ban the controversial practice of sexual orientation conversion therapy for minors.
Also known as “reparative therapy” or sexual orientation change efforts therapy, the practice involves helping those with unwanted same-sex attraction.
The legislation, known as P.S. 184, is now in the Puerto Rican Senate and would prohibit the practice for minors. The bill was introduced in February and is still pending a vote.
Bishop Daniel Fernández Torres of Arecibo is among the legislation s ardent critics, warning in an interview with LifeSiteNews that if passed, it would effectively outlaw Catholic Church teaching. ....

Governor of Puerto Rico Pedro PierluisiPuerto Rico Gov. Pedro Pierluisi declared a state of emergency Sunday over a tide of violence against women,
a measure local activists have demanded for years to address a scourge that continues to go largely unpunished.
The emergency declaration calls for a series of wide-ranging policies to combat femicides and other forms of violence. The executive order was hailed by advocates as an important step in addressing a long-existing issue that jumped back into the spotlight after a recent murder. Pierluisi said in a press release:
Gender violence is a social evil, based on ignorance and attitudes that cannot have space or tolerance in the Puerto Rico that we aspire to. It is my duty and my commitment as governor to establish a STOP to gender violence and for these purposes I have declared a state of emergency. ....

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Tribune News Service) Puerto Rico Gov. Pedro Pierluisi declared a state of emergency Sunday over the island s gender violence crisis, a measure local groups have demanded from the government for years.
The executive order which allocates public resources to address femicides and other forms of violence against women is considered an important step in addressing a long-existing issue that jumped back into the spotlight after a recent murder.
Gender violence is a social evil, based on ignorance and attitudes that cannot have space or tolerance in the Puerto Rico that we aspire to, said Pierluisi in a press release. It is my duty and my commitment as governor to establish a STOP to gender violence and for these purposes I have declared a state of emergency. ....
