Montana Indigenous People's Day pitched as 'day of education and celebration'

A procession of supporters of two bills establishing an Indigenous People’s Day in Montana offered their personal stories Wednesday to illustrate a broader lack of understanding of Native American history – as well Columbus Day‘s namesake – in the state.
“Why celebrate a man who committed deplorable and horrendous acts against humanity?” Billings resident Ben Pease asked the Senate State Administration Committee. “Yeah, Christopher Columbus was a murderer, we know this. But more importantly today, why teach an alternate, false history to our children and ourselves, and continue to lionize such a horrible human being?”
Pease, an Apsaalooke artist who is one of the co-founders of Indigenous People’s Day Montana, said the new holiday would offer a chance to celebrate Montana’s diversity while correcting long-standing misperceptions about the violent colonization of the continent. ....

Montana lawmaker withdraws controversial parenting bill

A freshman legislator from Bozeman on Wednesday said she is withdrawing a bill that unleashed a flood of outrage this week for its language that opponents argued would strengthen parental rights for rapists.
Rep. Jane Gillette, R-Bozeman, was scheduled to present House Bill 209 to the House Judiciary Committee on Friday, but said she won’t bring the legislation to any committee this session after the fury that erupted this week over the bill’s language.
Gillette said Wednesday the intent of the legislation was lost in translation and did not include enough input from victim advocates. Gillette also told the Montana State News Bureau she carried the bill on behalf of a group of family law attorneys, a group which includes her husband, Bozeman family law attorney Christopher Gillette.  ....

Bill To Ban Sanctuary Cities Draws Heated Testimony

Yellowstone Public Radio
Montana Republican Rep. Kenneth Holmlund introduces House Bill 200 to the House Judiciary Committee on Jan. 26, 2021.
Montana Democrats say a Republican state House committee chair used a double standard during a hearing Tuesday to silence verbal testimony from bill opponents who brought up race when talking about a proposal to ban sanctuary cities in the state.
Montana Democrats say a Republican state House committee chair used a double standard during a hearing Tuesday to silence verbal testimony from bill opponents who brought up race when talking about a proposal to ban sanctuary cities in the state.
There aren’t currently any sanctuary cities in Montana. But under House Bill 200, local governments would be fined and miss out on state grants if they set policy blocking local law enforcement from detaining undocumented immigrants sought by federal immigration authorities. ....

Capitol Talk: Abortion, Transgender Rights And Open Meeting Laws

This week on
Capitol Talk, restrictions on abortion and trans rights dominate the House Judiciary Committee while that same committee s Republicans bar reporters from a meeting. All that as old fissures reappear in the Republican caucus.
Listen now on
Capitol Talk with Sally Mauk, Holly Michels and Rob Saldin.
Sally Mauk Holly, the Judiciary Committee this week passed, on mostly party line votes, bills aimed at limiting abortions and limiting options for transgender Montanans. Let s start with the abortion bills that are now headed to the full House. And these are bills we ve seen before in previous sessions.
Holly Michels They are. They re pretty controversial pieces of legislation, and it feels to me like they re hitting pretty early on in this session. Like you said, there s four abortion bills that all advanced out of the House Judiciary Committee this week. Those were on party line votes, with Republican support and Democratic opposition. ....
