Trans Halakha Project: An Interview with Rabbi Becky Silverstein and Laynie Soloman

In honor of Shavuot, a holiday celebrating receiving the Torah, I spoke with Rabbi Becky Silverstein and Laynie Soloman about the ways they are helping queer and trans Jews receive and create Torah in new ways. 
The Trans Halakha project, which is housed at Svara: a Traditionally Radical Yeshiva, aims to provide trans Jews with a framework within which to develop meaningful Jewish practice that affirms their identities as trans folks. Silverstein and Soloman share the ways that Jewish learning that includes queer and trans Jews not only enriches the lives of those individuals, but ripples outward to strengthen surrounding communities. The word Halakha itself comes from the hebrew root ....

'Second class citizens': LGBTQ students allege culture of alienation and fear at Yeshiva University – The Forward


Molly Meisels, then a senior at Yeshiva University, was greeted in class last fall with an unusual message from a professor: “I don’t care if you’re a ‘he,’ a ‘she,’ or an ‘it.’”
Meisels, 22, one of only a few openly LGBTQ undergraduates at the more than 2,000-strong university, recalled feeling taken aback but not surprised. In keeping with an increasingly common practice of the remote learning era, Meisels, who identifies as bisexual and non-binary, had placed preferred pronouns (they/she) in a parenthetical alongside their name on Zoom the only student of the couple dozen in the course to have done so. ....
