　　在近代奥运历史上，由于国力和体育运动普及的原因，中国曾经只是一个边缘性的存在。不过，随着国家社会与体育事业的发展，中国和奥运会的关系正在发生着根本性的变化。在2008年北京奥运会上，当“我和你，同住地球村”的歌声响起，当“同一个世界，同一个梦想”的口号传遍世界的时候，中国热情拥抱了世界，也向世界传递了中国人对于奥运的理解，即奥运会是展现人类文明的窗口，也是世界各国人民凝聚共识、增进理解的机缘。不久之后，北京将举办2022年冬季奥运会，成为双奥之城。中国悠久的历史文化传统，可以也必然能为奥运精神、奥运文化提供新的价值元素。
　　让体育为人类的和谐共生服务一直是现代奥林匹克运动发起人顾拜旦的理想，他在1912年斯德哥尔摩奥运会上发表的《体育颂》，结尾就讴歌：“啊，体育，你就是和平！你在各民族间建立愉快的联系。你在有节制、有组织、有技艺的体力较量中产生，使全世界的青年学会相互尊重和学习，使不同民族特质成为高尚而公平竞赛的动力！”国际奥委会在其《奥林匹克宪章》中指出，奥林匹克主义是使人“全面均衡发展的一种生活哲学”，奥林匹克是要创建一种新的“生活方式”，这种生活方式让体育运动为人的和谐发展服务，并“促进建立一个维护人的尊严的、和平的社会”。
　　顾拜旦还重视体育对于塑造人格的作用，他在1908年伦敦奥运会期间的一次招待会上发表讲话说：“对于人生而言，重要的绝非凯旋，而是战斗。这意味着主要不是已经获胜，而是进行战斗。传播这些格言，是为了造就更健壮的人类――从而使人类更加严谨审慎而又勇敢高贵。”从这里我们可以看到顾拜旦强调比名次更为重要的人的“审慎”“勇敢”和“高贵”。在《体育颂》中，顾拜旦又重申了他的理想：“啊，体育，你就是美丽！你塑造的人体变得高尚还是卑鄙，要看它是被可耻的欲望引向堕落；还是由健康的力量悉心培育。”
　　熟悉中国传统文化的人，一定能体会到顾拜旦的思想与儒家教化观念的一致之处。儒家教育理念的核心就是培养君子人格及人的社会责任感。
　　孔子以“六艺”教人，这六艺包括礼、乐、射、御、书、数。其中与现代体育运动最具关联性的是“射”与“御”。奥运会上的“马术”就与“御”有关，广义地说，赛车运动，也可以被看作是现代的“御术”。在传统社会，“御”和“射”都是很重要的“职业技能”，比如驾驭战车，在战乱频繁的春秋战国时期，定是“士”的必备技能。在弓箭作为常规武器的时代，“射”是体现一个人战斗技能和勇气的重要标志。同时，“御”和“射”也不断从“职业行为”中分离并仪式化而成为重要的礼仪活动。《礼记・礼运》说：“是故夫礼，必本于天，
