Black midwives matter in women's health care

As a midwife in South Florida with a practice that is 85-90% Black, it was difficult to know what to say to my clients in the wake of the murder of Ma’Khia Bryant. With International Day of the Midwife on May 5, we are reminded once again that state violence is a big factor in why Black midwives are necessary.
According to HuffPost, in a White House roundtable during Black Maternal Health Week in April, Vice President Kamala Harris linked the same racial inequities that lead to police killing Black people to how Black women suffer higher rates of death in pregnancy, and childbirth. ....

Why the Human Body Has Not Evolved to Make Childbirth Easier or Has It?

AUSTIN, Texas Despite advances in medicine and technology, childbirth isn’t likely to get much easier on women from a biological perspective.
Engineers at The University of Texas at Austin and University of Vienna revealed in new research a series of evolutionary trade-offs that have created a near-perfect balance between supporting childbirth and keeping organs intact on a day-to-day basis. Human reproduction is unique because of the comparatively tight fit between the birth canal and baby’s head, and it is likely to stay that way because of these competing biological imperatives.
The size of the pelvic floor and canal is key to keeping this balance. These opposing duties have constrained the ability of the pelvic floor to evolve over time to make childbirth easier because doing that would sacrifice the ability to protect organs. ....

UN report: Many women in poor nations can''t say, "No sex"

Less than half the women in 57 developing countries are denied the right to say no to sex with their partners, to decide whether to use contraception, or to seek health care, a U.N. report said Wednesday.
The report by the U.N. Population Fund said the data covers only about one-quarter of the world s countries, over half in Africa.
But the findings paint an alarming picture of the state of bodily autonomy for millions of women and girls who don t have the power to make choices about their bodies and their futures without fear or violence, it said.
The fund said only 55 per cent of girls and women in the 57 countries are able to decide whether to have sex, whether to use contraception and when to seek health care such as sexual and reproductive health services. ....

Planned caesarean births less likely in first lockdown

King’s College London
Pregnant women, non-binary people and trans men were less likely to have gone ahead with planned caesarean births during the first lockdown.
The research showed that 14% of parents surveyed who had a scheduled caesarean altered this plan because of the pandemic, either because they changed their minds or the hospital cancelled the procedure. Many favoured home births where their partner could be with them.
Dr Mari Greenfield, from the School of Life Course Sciences, surveyed 1,754 new and expectant parents in the UK in April 2020, during the early weeks of the first lockdown.
Dr Greenfield told the British Sociological Association’s online annual conference that of the 134 who had a caesarean birth arranged with a hospital, 8 (6%) had been cancelled by the NHS Trust, and 11 (8%) by the parents. ....
