Churches in SJ and across US mark Easter with return of indoor worship

In California, many congregations are now easing into what once were normal practices.
St. Mark Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach began to meet in person in mid-March and the church is focused on “finding ways to safely allow people to come back to a space that has held a lot of meaning for them,” said Pastor Mark Davis.
The church will have a combination of virtual and in-person services. On Easter Sunday, there will be no choir, but singers behind plexiglass. Even as they are easing into normalcy, Davis said, he can see the deep meaning it has for congregants. ....

Coronavirus update, Feb. 17: Stanislaus deaths surpass 900. Hospital cases increase

Feb. 17 The six deaths announced Tuesday put Stanislaus County at 905 residents lost to the pandemic since last spring.
The county Health Services Agency had gone two days over the Presidents Day weekend without reporting any deaths.
Stanislaus added 138 cases Tuesday, for a total of 49,128. The county also has 427,795 negative test results and 46,575 people who are presumed recovered.
The single-day positive rate was 7.33%, up from the previous day s 5.13%, according to state data. The seven-day rolling rate was 8.26%, up from 8.15%. The 14-day rate was 9.97%, up from 9.5%. ....

Feb. 13 Six more Stanislaus County residents have died of COVID-19, raising the total to 894 as of Friday. The county Health Services Agency reported 201 positive tests, for a total of 48,577. Stanislaus also has 420,319 negative test results and 45,674 people who are presumed recovered. The single-day positive rate was 12.28%, nearly double the previous day's 6.44%, according to state data. . ....

Secretary of State nominee says he will fill LGBT position at agency

Several Catholic entrepreneurs this week were awarded $100,000 each as investment in project ideas “that will make a profound impact on the Church and the world.”
The OSV Institute’s annual Demo Day, whereby Catholic entrepreneurs pitch ideas for a chance to earn a significant investment, was held virtually last weekend with some 400 attendees.
Over the past year, some 350 Catholic entrepreneurs submitted their ideas for consideration. By May, the judges had narrowed it down to 12 finalists, who presented their pitches to judges Aug. 29 via Zoom.
The three winning ideas each of which earned a $100,000 investment include a Spanish-language podcast network; an initiative to help parents teach the Catholic faith at home; and an organization designed to reach and minister to young adults experiencing same-sex attraction. ....
