GREENFIELD The Franklin County Jail and House of Correction has closed its immigration detention center, saying the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has not maintained the threshold agreed upon to financially justify keeping it open.
Sheriff Christopher Donelan said he leased to ICE one of his four 80-bed facilities, but the average number of immigrant detainees has dropped from 65 to roughly 20 in the past few years. Historically, the number had been 70 to 75 at any one time. The nine detainees remaining when the facility shut down a couple of weeks ago were taken to the Ply ....

Judge sides with School Committee on Exam School admissions policy – Jamaica Plain Gazette

Federal Judge William Young late last week issued his decision on the challenge to this year’s altered Exam School Admission process, saying that the temporary admissions system did not discriminate by race against white and Asian students, but it should be a system in place only one year to accommodate COVID-19.
In a 48-page opinion, Judge Young stressed that the plan was well-thought out and accomplished the goals of making the school more geographically and economically diverse, and though race was spoke of, it wasn’t a plan that sought to racially balance the Exam Schools – which would be unconstitutional. ....

POLL: WU, JANEY lead WIDE-OPEN MAYOR'S RACE — CDC presses PAUSE on JOHNSON and JOHNSON — BUDGET DAY

It’s not clear how long the hiatus will be, but
federal officials say it could last weeks. Massachusetts was expecting a smaller shipment of the one-shot vaccines already, but yesterday’s announcement
upended vaccine appointments all over the state. While Baker has pitched the J&J vaccine as an avenue to vaccinate people more quickly compared to its two-shot counterparts this pause could stretch the state’s in-demand vaccine supply even further, as more people try to book their shots. Plus,
experts worry it could erode public trust in the vaccine.

Hinds-led committee examines inequalities, pandemic-driven trends

There now is a Massachusetts Senate committee tasked with figuring out how to do that.
State Sen. Adam Hinds, D-Pittsfield, chairs the Committee on Reimagining Massachusetts: Post-Pandemic Resiliency, which met publicly for the first time Tuesday to discuss housing, internet access and affordability, and regional issues facing Southeastern Massachusetts.
Rather than issue a report after a set period of time, Hinds sees the committee’s role as to study issues facing a post-pandemic Massachusetts and to investigate proposed solutions, recommending or supporting legislative actions as necessary.
The “reimagining committee” includes the chairs of committees on education, housing, racial equity, and labor and workforce development. ....
