Festival of Books: Writers discuss U.S. immigration history

Print
Over the last century, U.S. officials have removed more people than they’ve allowed to remain in the country on a permanent basis.
This fact, simple but shocking at least for anyone who thinks of the U.S. as a nation of immigrants came from Adam Goodman, author of “The Deportation Machine: America’s Long History of Expelling Immigrants,” during a Los Angeles Times Festival of Books panel Saturday on immigrants and American society. Goodman was joined in the discussion on the true history of U.S. immigration by poets Marcelo Hernandez Castillo and Anthony Cody, New York Times deputy national editor Jia Lynn Yang and Los Angeles Times reporter Daniel Hernandez, who moderated. ....

Latinx identity is an incredible blend of movements, cultures, and language. It is also an identity that continues to face considerable challenges, including inhumane migration policies, and inaction by Congress, which continually threatens to defer the
American Dream for the undocumented Latinx community.
But despite these inequalities, still they rise. And thus, we celebrate the lives and experiences of these five Latinx poets, who use their poetry as artful protest, and bridge their multitudinous identities with mastery and courageous truth-telling.  ....

Once I Was You: A Memoir of Love and Hate in America by Maria Hinojosa
As an immigrant from Mexico as a child to her adult life as a journalist in New York City, Maria Hinojosa tries to find her footing while being a voice for Latinas and Latinos on an individual level and nationally. This memoir educates readers in big and small ways, through powerful storytelling and the author s vulnerability. I’m a sucker for books written by or about journalists. –
