THE STANDARD POLITICS Former Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri (right) with Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria in Laikipia West last year. [File, Standard] With the list of presidential aspirants having taken shape a year to the General Election, a group of politicians is now angling for the coveted running mate position. Some Cabinet secretaries, first- and second-term governors and politicians are jostling to get the eye of presidential contenders. Already Deputy President William Ruto, ODM leader Raila Odinga, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Kanu chairman Gideon Moi and Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi have put their best foot forward in the race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta whose term ends in August next year.
THE STANDARD OPINION Director Directorate of Criminal Investigations George M. Kinoti displaying firearms (inset, right) surrendered to the police by Citizen TV. [Wilberforce Okwiri, Standard] George Kinoti doesn’t need a gun to shoot himself in the foot. His tongue does an impeccable job. Whenever he is rambling, the organ wags intermittently, sticking out like that of a heavy-tongued serpent. His isn’t the straight-shooting flick made by the crawling reptile banished from Eden many centuries ago. But that’s as far as the differences between the two go. Just like the biblical character, Kinoti’s tongue has landed him in trouble more times than he would wish.
THE STANDARD NAIROBI Kenyan activist, Edwin Kiama, will represent East Africa at the Africans Rising NGO after winning seat. [File, Standard] Political activist Edwin Kiama Mutemi, who recently had a run-in with the Government over his poster painting Uhuru Kenyatta as a President who has an insatiable appetite for loans, has won an elective seat in a continental NGO. Kiama will represent East Africa at the Africans Rising NGO for a period of three years. Africans Rising is a Pan-African movement of people and organisations, working for peace, justice and dignity. The lobby group says, on its website, that it is focused on improving accountability, ending corruption and pushing for freedom of expression rights to be observed in African countries.
April 19th 2021 at 08:38:38 GMT +0300 If Dr Mukhisa Kituyi succeeds in his bid to become Kenya’s fifth president, he will join a small, elite club of leaders whose spouses are freedom fighters in their own right. His wife, Dr Ling Merete, currently a senior UN official based in Geneva, Switzerland, traditionally keeps a low profile. But she is a giant of the second liberation from the 90s when her husband was among the Young Turks that took on the Kanu regime in fiery calls and protests that led to multi-party politics. Former Sirisia MP John Munyasia explains that politically instigated tribal clashes uprooted many families from their homes in Bungoma and Trans Nzoia. Forced to seek refuge at market centres, the displaced persons suffered both trauma and physical injuries.

By Crazy Monday Reporter | 4 years ago Without affirmative action, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf beat the hell out of seasoned male politicians some time back in Sierra Leone and become the country’s first female president. Journalist Monique Ohsan Bellepeau later on pulled off a similar stunt in Mauritius. So did tough-talking Joyce Hilda Banda in Malawi the other day. Need I mention no nonsense Catherine Samba-Panza who wrestled career male politicians in a muddied Central African Republic political process, floored them and became first female president (albeit interim) in 2014? Far afield, we have Dilma Rousseff who went head to head with established male politicians and strolled into the Brazilian state house.
