As “Pieces of a Woman” opens, Martha and Sean eagerly await the birth of their child. Having chosen a home delivery, the partners follow their planned steps to contact the midwife once the contractions follow a prescribed rhythm. When their preferred midwife can’t come, a substitute soon arrives to guide the couple through this special time. Then tragedy strikes. A wedge begins. The intensity of the opening moments of this film immediately grab our attention. But screenwriter Kata Wéber dilutes the impact by not first giving us the chance to get to know the people. The script focuses more on the events that transpire than on the people clinging to hope. We learn little about Martha and Sean as individuals or a couple, what they want for their child, how they see themselves as parents or what excites and frightens them about ....
January 9, 2021 Helen G. Baltrukonis CHESHIRE – Helen G. Baltrukonis, whose early years on the family farm instilled a dedication to hard work and provided a lifetime of material for stories, died Dec. 23, 2020. She was 102. The cause was COVID-19. Mrs. Baltrukonis was born in Waterbury in 1918 on the last day of September, a phrase she enjoyed using to test listeners’ memories of the number of days in the month. She lived nearly all of her life-well into her 90s-in the house on Marion Road in Cheshire that had been part of the family dairy and produce farm. Her parents, Joseph and Anna (Motiekonis) Griskauskas, bought the property after emigrating from Lithuania and first settling in Waterbury. The farm continued at the west Cheshire location, roughly the area around what is now Barn Hill Road, until the 1960s. ....

Retracing Dickinson’s wild at least for her excursion to D.C. “A Poetic Dialogue,” a silhouette sculpture by Michael Virzi, depicts poets Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost observing social distancing, six feet toe-to-toe, in their fictional conversation in Amherst’s Sweetser Park. It’s just down the street from the Emily Dickinson Museum, which includes The Dickinson Homestead, the poet’s birthplace and home from 1855 to 1886.
