Book presentation to President


During a courtesy visit earlier this month at San Anton Palace, Attard, Dr Charles Xuereb (left) presented to President George Vella, a copy of the third edition of his book France in the Maltese Collective Memory, Perceptions, Perspectives, Identities after Bonaparte in British Malta, published by Malta University Press. This edition also marks the 200th anniversary of Napoleon’s death in 1821. The book contains a seven-page special text on Bonaparte’s links to Malta and carries a memento anniversary ribbon on its cover. The book, published by Malta University Press, is now on sale.

Bonaparte wrote Malta's first political and social constitution in Valletta


On May 5, 1821, 200 years ago this week, Napoleon I, Emperor of the French, born in 1769 on the island of Corsica in the Mediterranean,  expired, at the age of 51, on the island of St Helena in the South Atlantic. Considered by many as an islander – born and died on islands – he was also exiled on the Italian island of Elba in 1814, from where he made his surprise heroic comeback for 100 days in 1815, until finally he faced allied enemies for the last time at Waterloo.
In June 1798, then a promising 29-year-old French general, Bonaparte dropped anchor in Malta for six days on his way to Egypt before his rise to conquer most of the continent, removing monarchies, and reign as the lord of Europe for 15 years. The French Malta interlude did not last long but it did ignite what was to become the island’s long road to future freedom and independence. ....

National Book Prize 2020 winners announced


The National Book Council (NBC) has announced the winners of the 2020 National Book Prize for books published in Malta in 2019. The Prize celebrates the highest achievements in literary and research publishing across nine competitive categories.
Owing to the extraordinary circumstances, the awards ceremony was held online, and for the very first time broadcast to the public on the National Book Council’s Facebook page and website. The streamed ceremony was hosted by veteran TV broadcaster John Demanuele.
In his opening speech, NBC executive chairperson Mark Camilleri noted that 2020 has been a difficult year for the book industry, particularly hard-hit by the economic crisis left in the wake of the ongoing global pandemic which followed a period of political turmoil. ....
