Health campaigners call for ‘honest’ labelling on so-called healthy snacks
Researchers at Action on Salt are demanding a restriction on the use of what it calls misleading nutrition claims on HFSS products after its new data revealed seemingly ‘healthy’ snacks contain often higher salt levels than crisps and flavoured nuts.
The group analysed 118 snacks including dried/roasted pulses and processed pulse snacks such as lentil curls, chickpea chips and puffs,
which are often perceived as healthy alternatives to the usual snacking options such as crisps and flavoured nuts.
Despite these products being on average lower in fat, saturated fat and calories, and higher in fibre compared to standard crisps and nuts, over one in three (43%) contained more than 1.5g/100g of salt – often more than that in crisps and nuts. KP salted peanuts contain 1.3g/100g salt, while Walkers Ready Salted crisps contain 0.35g of salt in a 25g bag. ....

Organic sales are on the rise in Europe. But, for some consumers, the price premium charged by the sector acts as a barrier. According to Alara Wholefoods founder Alex Smith, organic manufacturers need to make ‘affordability part of the conversation’.
The European market for organic food continues to grow. According to FiBL, the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture, sales reached €45bn in 2019 with a growth rate of 8% in the region. In the decade 2010-2019, the European market value has more than doubled, the organisation noted.
Increased farmland dedicated to organic production also follows this upward trajectory. Between 2010 and 2017, organic farmland increased by 70%, data from Eurostat demonstrates. ....

Matzo Candy Recipe by Beth Ebin

Directions
Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
Step 2: On the baking sheets, evenly distribute 5 sheets of matzo (break to fit if needed).
Step 3: To a saucepan, add 8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter and 1 cup brown sugar. Over medium heat, stir until melted, about 3 to 5 minutes.
Step 4: Pour caramel mixture over matzo and spread evenly. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes.
Step 5: As soon as matzo comes out of the oven, sprinkle with 1 cup chocolate chips. Spread the chocolate as it starts to melt. Spread evenly over matzo and then top with any toppings you’d like, such as sprinkles, mini marshmallows, fruit, or M&Ms. ....
