The Little Shamrock
The Little Shamrock
Location: 807 Lincoln Way, near Ninth Avenue
Opened: 1890s
The Little Shamrock at 807 Lincoln Way near Ninth Avenue is the Sunset District s oldest business, serving drinks in the same location since the 1890s. The story goes that Antone Herzo and his wife opened their pub on October 28, 1893, to serve the thirsty workmen who were creating the Midwinter Fair in Golden Gate Park. The bar recognized this date in a centennial celebration in 1993.
But a bit of research pokes some holes in the official story. (Thanks to John Freeman for his intrepid research.)
First problem: Antone Herzo died July 17, 1893 at age 38, which is quite an impediment to opening a bar three months later. ....

The base is all that remains of Sweeny Observatory on top of Strawberry Hill in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on Mar. 8, 2021. The observatory was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake.Douglas Zimmerman/SFGATE
Thomas U. Sweeny may be the first person to have a Golden Gate Park landmark named after him, and he was certainly the first to make a show of it.
Sweeny, who made a fortune in gold-mining and buying property in San Francisco’s Inner Sunset, cast himself as a modest man of the people at a dedication ceremony 130 years ago for his newly built panoramic viewpoint atop Strawberry Hill: the Sweeny Observatory. ....

The 150-foot-high SkyStar Ferris wheel was assembled at the eastern end of the Music Concourse at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco in March.Paul Chinn / The Chronicle 2020
One might think San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors would have a full enough plate with myriad serious problems facing the city in a pandemic: health systems overwhelmed, residents ailing, businesses reeling, schools shuttered, homelessness surging and property crimes soaring. It’s absurd to think board members would be anxious to intervene these days in matters that are outside their bailiwick. ....

Unraveling the Mystery of Two 1890s Richmond District Houses
The Low family at Sutro Baths with an unusual floatation system for their child, 1890s. -
I always perk up when someone says they have old photos from San Francisco that need location identification. Sometimes I’m lucky and know the site; other times there is too little to go on. A grouping of contemporary photos, like in an album, adds more clues to find locations. I recently was presented with a series of photos in two albums that became one of the more challenging and fun projects I have attempted. This is a detective story of sleuthing collaboration, combining old research skills and new digital technology mixed with a good dose of luck. ....
