Clergy & COVID Vaccine -- Half of the U.S. Doesn't Prioritize Clergy for Vaccine: Report

(Patrick Semansky/Reuters)
For months, some states have handed down stringent COVID restrictions to houses of worship deemed “nonessential,” leaving those institutions few options save legal recourse to serve their congregations.
Now, the country’s religious communities face an additional challenge. According to a new report from the Napa Legal Institute, 43 states and the District of Columbia are failing to prioritize clergy in their COVID vaccine distribution plans despite federal guidance dictating that they should be deemed essential workers.

“The First Amendment, public policy, and current administrative guidance clearly require that clergy and faith leaders receive the same protections as other frontline essential workers,” Napa Legal writes in its report on the discrepancy. ....

Michigan Revised COVID-19 Anti-Retaliation Law

Wednesday, December 30, 2020
Michigan employers got substantial relief from some of the more onerous provisions of the COVID-19 anti-retaliation law that was part of the Oct. 22 COVID-19 compromise legislative package. The amended law is effective as of Dec. 29, 2020, when it was signed by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
Perhaps the most significant amendment is the removal of a provision from the original legislation entitling employees to disqualify themselves from work for up to 14 days due to alleged close contact with an individual displaying COVID-19 symptoms. Employers found this provision to be almost impossible to fairly police, though close contact with an individual who tests positive for COVID-19 is still covered by the law. Overall, the statute prohibits an employer from taking adverse action against an employee who is absent from work because of COVID-19. ....

Loudoun rolls out COVID-19 vaccine to high-priority county employees

Loudoun County began giving the COVID-19 vaccination to its front-line employees Monday, including county Fire and Rescue workers and members of the county’s Medical Reserve Corps and Health Department.
These employees, identified by the Virginia Department of Health as part of the phase 1a high-priority group, will be receiving the Moderna vaccine, a two-dose series separated by 28 days.
Getting high-priority county workers the Moderna vaccine is the next step of the vaccination process in Loudoun. More than two weeks ago, the first COVID-19 vaccines arrived at Loudoun County hospitals and started to be administered to health care personnel.
At this time, hospitals in Virginia are using the Pfizer vaccine for their workers. Pharmacies that are vaccinating residents of long-term care facilities also are using the Pfizer vaccine because they have deep-freeze capabilities. ....

ESCANABA Following the recent approval of a vaccine to protect against COVID-19, health officials across the nation are gearing up for what is slated to be the largest vaccination campaign in U.S. history. The Upper Peninsula is no exception.
Immunizations for healthcare workers are already underway in Michigan. Frontline healthcare workers at Spectrum Health Butterworth in Grand Rapids and Michigan Medical in Ann Arbor were the first in the state to get the vaccine when immunizations kicked off Monday, and Public Health Delta & Menominee Counties said the Pfizer vaccine arrived in Delta County Thursday.
According to Jenni Miller, immunization and communicable disease coordinator for PHDM, the state has requested health departments not disclose which healthcare facilities are registered with the state as COVID Vaccination Program Enrolled Providers due to safety and security concerns.
