Manhattan purse-snatchers ambush three women in 15-minute spree

The blitz began about 8:20 p.m. Tuesday when the crooks hopped out of a gray Toyota Camry on West End Ave. near W. 62nd St. on the Upper West Side, snuck up behind a 50-year-old woman, pushed her to the ground and snatched her purse, which contained her credit cards, police said.

OPINION: It's Time to End NYPD's Current Role in Crash Investigations – Streetsblog New York City

On Wednesday, the City Council takes up a bill that would remove central role of the NYPD in crash investigations and give that responsibility to the Department of Transportation, a bill that supporters say will increase the likelihood that crash analyses will lead to safer road designs. In addition, victims of crashes have long complained that the NYPD does a poor and insensitive job of investigating road violence. We asked a victim for her thoughts.

On June 8, 2016, I was run over by a reckless driver, while in the crosswalk with the light, as I crossed Third Ave at 41st Street in Manhattan on my way to work. The driver dragged me 50 feet and then fled, leaving me for dead.

The best sushi restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area

TOP Restaurants
Top Sushi Restaurants in the Bay Area
From homestyle nigiri plates to luxurious omakase, there are plenty of ways to do sushi in the Bay Area.

When daring to put together a list of the best sushi restaurants in the Bay Area, I had a lot of variables to consider. Do I focus on those bijou spots where finance guys used to commingle over omakase meals after notable sales at the office? Or the mom-and-pops, like San Francisco's Tekka, where regulars are made to feel like the owners' favorite grandkids? And what of the growing number of places offering vegan sushi, where vegetables are as lovingly cured, smoked and sliced as the finest Japanese fish? Our scene has it all, so I figure, let's do it all. On this list, you'll find excellent spots that cater to a multitude of moods and situations: sushi for the week before rent is due, sushi for meat-free Mondays, sushi for treating yourself to a good time. All are currently open for takeout or delivery. If you're looking for the best spots to sample seafood that's a little more cooked, check out my Top Seafood Restaurants list, which will cover all your cioppino-related needs.

Salvation Army to host Christmas toy distribution

Salvation Army to host Christmas toy distribution
TUCSON (KVOA) - The Salvation Army is set to hold its annual Christmas Angel Tree Toy distribution on Tuesday and Wednesday, helping families in need from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Salvation Army South Corps Community Center at 1625 S Third Ave.
The Salvation Army said families in need with children ages 12 and under can benefit from this Christmas program. This two-day event provides toys for families and children who could use them during the holidays. More than 1,500 families and 4,000 kids signed up for the event, according to Salvation Army.
For the past 23 years, the Salvation Army said more than 100 volunteers from the Voyager RV Park participated to make the event happen. They help collect and distribute toys. Without the Voyagers this important undertaking would never occur, it said.

DECISION 2021: Mayoral Candidates Tout Their Records on Reckless Drivers

It’s our December donation drive. Your gift helps us do these kinds of stories. So please click here.
With 211,038 crashes in the city in 2019, which killed 243 individuals and injured 61,265 (that’s an average of 578 crashes and 169 casualties a day, but who’s counting?), stopping reckless drivers from killing and maiming is an urgent public-health priority for the next mayor. So Streetsblog asked those who would lead us out of this crisis to detail their street-safety bona fides. Of the 11 we asked, 10 stepped up. (Ray McGuire was the exception.)
This is the fourth of daily rollouts of the candidates’ thoughtful and often-voluminous answers, which should provide safe-streets activists with a roadmap of where the hopefuls stand on our issues (the previous three installments focused on safe streets, “free” parking and a car-free Manhattan). At the end of the series, we’ll post all seven installments in one place for easy reference.
