Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC Last week’s UFC Vegas 26 fight night ended up something of a mishmash of last second matchmaking and reorganization following a bad run of injury and illness luck. What was supposed to be TJ Dillashaw vs. Cory Sandhagen ended up as Marina Rodriguez vs. Michelle Waterson. And Diego Sanchez saw his final UFC bout end before it even started, getting tossed out on his ear just a week out from the event—resulting in Alex Morono stepping up to fight ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone on a few days notice. Despite all that, however, the last few bouts of the night delivered solid entertainment.
UFC Vegas 26: Rodriguez vs. Waterson - Winners and Losers Share this story Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC The UFC took its time in officially announcing a replacement main event for UFC Vegas 26 after the initial headliner, a bantamweight scrap between Cory Sandhagen and former 135-pound champion T.J. Dillashaw fell through. When the promotion announced that the new main event would be a flyweight matchup between top-10 ranked strawweights Marina Rodriguez and Michelle Waterson, it sounded like a strange decision. Strange or not, it turned out to be a good call. Related Over the course of five rounds, Rodriguez, who had a size advantage over her opponent, and probably a power advantage with the move to 125 pounds, did her best to finish Waterson. Meanwhile, Waterson showed her toughness and grit. She hung tough with Rodriguez and after spending most of the fourth round in top position on the mat after she scored a takedown, Waterson gave fans a good sweat heading into the final stanza.

Of course, it would be better if TJ Dillashaw and Cory Sandhagen were still headlining, but getting Michelle Waterson and Marina Rodriguez to step in on the short amount of time that they did was a hell of a coup. And while the co-main event is still underwhelming – it would have been if Diego Sanchez was still attached – there are three other contests on the undercard that more than make up for the underwhelming co-main. After all, few would disagree they’re all more meaningful than Donald Cerrone and Alex Morono. So yeah, I’d say this card is pretty damned awesome.

Here are the fighters who lost and regained a UFC title in the past decade: Cain Velasquez, Stipe Miocic, Jon Jones, Jose Aldo, Dominick Cruz, and T.J. Dillashaw. It’s a legendary list and not a long one. Rose Namajunas is now part of that group after UFC 261. Namajunas pulled off the upset on Saturday and did so in such a way that if you hadn’t glanced at the odds, you wouldn’t have believed that she was the underdog at all. Her 78-second head kick knockout of Zhang Weili will go down in history as one of the all-time great championship finishes and it’s even more impressive when you consider the context.

The former strawweight champion became the first woman in UFC history to regain a title when she scored a quick knockout win over Weili Zhang. With her stoppage win, Namajunas also moved into the top spot in two categories in the UFC strawweight record book. Namajunas lost the title in memorable fashion in 2019 when Jessica Andrade slammed her on her head. The impact knocked out Namajunas. Namajunas defeated Andrade in the rematch, but Andrade had already surrendered the title to Zhang before that 2020 matchup.
