Recent weekends on Capitol Street in downtown Charleston have been active. At Capital Market last Saturday, people pushed shopping carts at the open-air market, looking for plants to fill their gardens this summer. The city blocked off much of the street for outdoor dining. A jazz band played for those eating. Couples went out for ice cream and coffee.
There was a line outside of local bakery Charleston Bread. Patti Salisbury, 62, ordered fresh cookies for a church celebration the next day.
“They’re still apparently having their limited capacity inside, which is okay with me,” she said. ....

Community Center Helps Hundreds of West Dallas Residents Get COVID-19 Vaccine

She’s a busy mom of two who works three jobs.
“I just made it on my lunch break, very convenient,” said Bianca Vargas, who got vaccinated.
Candace Thompson collaborated with West Dallas leaders to open the vaccine site.
“I think it reaches more people because it helps overcome the barriers that accessing the vaccine presented in the first place,” said Community Outreach Manager for Baylor Scott & White Health and Wellness Center, Candace Thompson.
Organizers say the site is a great start that will hopefully bring more clinics to the area.
“75212 West Dallas is a very huge area. I’m not sure if people know that. A lot of our areas are walking communities too, so just because a vaccine clinic is offered in West Dallas, doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be two or three offered just to provide that accessibility,” said Executive Director for the Wesley-Rankin Community Center, Shellie Ross. ....

To be more effective, cities need to support these community gardens, as demonstrated by an innovative program in Austin, experts say.
Neyssa Shockley stands on her family s land in Dolphin Heights. “You won’t meet a person around here who doesn’t recognize my father’s name,” said Shockley, 31. Her father was James “Skip” Shockley, an activist and member of the Dallas Black Panther Party. “Community meant everything to him.” His final request before he died last May was to turn the family land into a community garden.(Nitashia Johnson) ....

Well-Employed in Pandemic Times: Landscaping Goats

Dec. 15, 2020 10:08 am ET
Candace Thompson, manager of the Stuyvesant Cove Park in lower Manhattan, was pulling on a giant bindweed one day when a woman eating lunch nearby offered some advice.
“She went, ‘You need goats,’ ” Ms. Thompson remembers.
The park manager was intrigued. She placed an order for 20 of the animals, which arrived in early September in a trailer from Rhinebeck, N.Y. Two and a half days later, most of the weeds were gone.
Goatscaping, as this trick is called, has grown in popularity in recent years as an environmentally friendly way to clear overgrown lots. Covid-19 has boosted the demand. Goats can be on the job during lockdowns. Ms. Thompson turned to goats after New York City’s spring restrictions forced the park’s usual group of volunteers to stay home and left it full of weeds. ....
