2 Southern Tier lawmakers test positive for COVID-19

Two more local lawmakers have announced they tested positive for the coronavirus.
State Assemblymember Joseph Giglio, who represents all of Cattaraugus and Allegany counties and part of Steuben County in the Southern Tier s 148th district, has announced that he and his wife Ann have both tested positive for COVID-19.
Giglio took a test after experiencing mild flu-like symptoms. He said in a release that the couple is self-isolating at home and noted that he has been working remotely for several weeks, carrying out his legislative duties via Zoom and conference calls.

Mayor Sundquist Tests Positive for COVID-19
JAMESTOWN – Mayor
Eddie Sundquist reported Tuesday that he has tested positive for COVID-19. Here’s the statement he released Tuesday morning:
“Yesterday morning I woke up with a fever and cough and immediately scheduled a rapid test. Unfortunately, COVID-19 was detected. I will remain in isolation until my doctor says it is safe for me to return to work in-person. In the meantime, I will continue to work remotely. My symptoms remain mild and I will work with the county health department to identify any individuals that may be deemed a contact.
My staff and I take COVID-19 very seriously. My office and I have followed and will continue to follow CDC guidelines, use social distancing, and wear masks or face coverings when social distancing cannot be maintained. ....

In State Of The City Address, Sundquist Has Some Ideas | News, Sports, Jobs

Feb 1, 2021
On Saturday, we took issue with Mayor Eddie Sundquist’s continued ill-formed statements whether intentional or not toward past administrations.
But all was not bad in Sundquist’s State of the City address. In fact, Sundquist has put forward some interesting ideas for the coming year.
It’s good to see that Sundquist wants to take a tougher stance on absentee property owners, for example. We have been critical of prior efforts by the City Council and past administrations on rental registrations and rental inspections. Sundquist is right in wanting to hold poor landlords more responsible while finding a way to incentivize involved landlords who work to keep their properties up to date. We hope his efforts pay bigger dividends than past efforts. ....

Unknowingly, Sundquist's Words Burn Some Bridges | News, Sports, Jobs

Jan 30, 2021
We have a slight quibble with Mayor Eddie Sundquist’s State of the City address last week that is symptomatic of something we have noticed from Sundquist’s first year in office.
The mayor does himself no favors when he makes statements that can be easily refuted with a quick Google search.
For example, Sundquist said Monday during his State of the City address that for the first time in decades, the city has allocated funding to improve neighborhoods and provide direct funding to homeowner to make necessary repairs to their homes.
It’s not hard to see that statement doesn’t hold up to the slightest bit of scrutiny. The city has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years in Community Development Block Grant dollars on activities like housing demolitions, owner occupied housing repairs, rental property repairs, targeted code enforcement sweeps in eligible neighborhoods, Zombie Property work going back at least six years and partneri ....
