Valentine Island in northern Western Australia is a swirling mix of blues and reddish browns, as seen from space by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission. The mission, which is made up of two satellites, imaged the tiny island for Valentine s Day. Valentine Island is just about 1 mile (1.60 kilometers) long and 0.15 miles (250 meters) wide and can be found in the King Sound, a large gulf that has one of the highest tides in all of Australia.

Who was Dorothy Johnson Vaughan?
Dorothy Johnson Vaughan worked as a mathematician on the SCOUT Launch Vehicle Program that sent America’s first satellites into space.
Vaughan was an African American mathematics teacher who became one of the leading mathematical engineers in early days of the aerospace industry. After the U.S. defense industry desegregated, Vaughan worked with leading computer operators and engineers, becoming an expert in the FORTRAN programming coding language at NASA. She worked on the SCOUT Launch Vehicle Program that shot satellites into space. Vaughan and other female African American mathematicians are the subject of a 2016 film Hidden Figures. ....

The European Space Agency s Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission snapped this chilly photo of New York City on Feb. 4, 2021 showing the city blanketed in snow. This recent snow storm was classified as major and affected a majority of the Northeast United States, with New York declaring a state of emergency for both the immense snowfall and blistering winds. Copernicus Sentinel-2 is an Earth-observing mission made up of two satellites: Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2B. The pair monitor and image our planet, orbiting it from space.

One of the myriad ways Black Americans have contributed to the growth and development of the United States has been through service in the federal government despite substantialbarriers to their success. 
For the past two years,
Government Executive has recognized distinguished public servants throughout American history via induction into the Government Hall of Fame. Many of the  inductees are Black leaders who have served in critical positions in the U.S. government some prominent, some lesser-known. All, however, have made powerful contributions to American life and history, from giving voice to enslaved Black people to making calculations vital to John Glenn’s historic space flight.  ....
