As I sat down to write the 2020 Year in Review, I thought: I don t want to relive this year, nor should anyone else. But tradition dictates an annual recap, which if left unwritten, would end my positive relationship with CVN bookkeeper Jane Pascoe. Plus, the newspaper is a weekly black hole of white space that must be filled. So here it goes:
A January 2020 blizzard that brought 50 inches of snow in two days prompted then-borough manager Debra Schnabel to declare a public safety emergency. She told the CVN she hoped the public would hunker down while public works crews cleared roads. The term would soon reappear in a different context two months after the severe weather event that, in hindsight, seems miniscule. ....

Lawsuit Aims at Trump's Repeal of Logging Restriction in Alaska

(CN) A diverse coalition of environmental groups, indigenous communities and businesses located in Southeastern Alaska filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration Wednesday, claiming the rollback of restrictions on logging in the 17-million-acre Tongass National Forest could harm one of the continent’s largest forests. 
The Organized Village of Kake, the Hoonah Indian Association, the Alaska Longline Fishermen’s Association and green groups like the Natural Resources Defense Council and The Center for Biological Diversity filed the complaint in federal court in Juneau Wednesday, saying the U.S. Forest Service failed to conduct an adequate environmental analysis before rolling back the Roadless Rules.  ....

(SitNews) Ketchikan, Alaska - Ketchikan Mayor Rodney Dial is sponsoring a resolution for the Borough Assembly to consider at Monday night’s meeting that will support the protection of individual civil rights relative to COVID-19 vaccinations.
Mayor Dial is requesting the Assembly to support his proposed resolution which calls on merchants and service providers to refrain from discriminating against any individual by denying that person access to goods or services based upon their COVID-19 vaccination status or failure to provide that information. ....
