Picture: Howard Crowdy Ann Murphy CORK hotelier Michael Magner has called on the government to deliver further reforms and legislation to help bring down insurance premium costs. Mr Magner, who owns the Vienna Woods Hotel in Glanmire, was commenting in the wake of the Judicial Council vote this morning to reduce awards for minor personal injuries. In his role as chairman of the Irish Hotel Federation’s insurance committee, Mr Magner said: ““The Government must now fast track the reform of the Personal Injuries Insurance Board (PIAB) and enact duty of care and perjury legislation. ....
Share this article The country s most senior judges have voted in favour of new guidelines aimed at reducing the level of personal injury pay-outs. The 166-member Judicial Council adopted the new rules at a meeting earlier today. Proposals will go before Cabinet next week on the implementation of the guidelines. The aim is for more consistency in damages - with awards for the most severe and catastrophic injuries now set at around €550,000. The new judicial rules are set to replace the current Book of Quantum guidelines on the amounts awarded for personal injuries. The edicts will mean an overall reduction in damages for minor injuries. ....

Taxpayers will cover the cost of defending the law partner of Jason Williams who, like the Orleans Parish district attorney-elect, faces tax fraud charges. Nicole Burdett told a federal magistrate judge Monday she could not afford her own lawyer, and the judge approved a public defender to represent her.Michael Magner, a noted white-collar defense attorney, was already representing Burdett after she and Williams were indicted in June, accused of inflating business expenses so their law firm could pay less taxes. Magner is among the attorneys who handle cases for the local federal public defenderâs office, and U.S. Magistrate Judge Dana Douglas approved his appointment Monday. Burdett was back in court after new charges were filed against her last week for allegedly falsifying her personal tax returns. Magner has called the charges against Burdett selective and vindictive. Burdett and Williams deny any wrongdoing and say the cases against them are politically motivated. ....
