Chinese state-backed hacking groups compromised at least five global telecommunications companies and stole phone records and location data, according to cybersecurity researchers.
The hacking groups waged a campaign across Southeast Asia from 2017 to 2021, in some cases exploiting security vulnerabilities in Microsoft Corp’s Exchange servers to gain access to telecommunication companies’ internal systems, according to a new report published Tuesday by US-based security firm Cybereason Inc.
Lior Div, the chief executive officer of Cybereason, said the hackers had obtained “the holy grail of espionage”, by gaining total control of the telecommunication networks they penetrated. Cybereason named the groups Soft Cell, Naikon and Group-3390. ....

WASHINGTON (Bloomberg): The US and China left open the possibility of a summit between their presidents, despite a contentious day of talks in which Beijing outlined a series of demands that Americans showed little willingness to meet.
Foreign Minister Wang Foreign Minister Wang Yi reiterated requirements from Beijing in Monday’s(July 26) talks in Tianjin with Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, namely that the US stop criticising China’s political system, drop all sanctions and tariffs, and stay out of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Xinjiang affairs.
Senior Biden administration officials told reporters afterward that Sherman was focused on setting guardrails on ties, rather than negotiating specific issues. They described the discussions as forthright and professional, even if they were at times tough. ....

OSLO (Reuters) -Norway said on Monday that a March 10 cyber attack on parliament’s e-mail system was carried out from China, calling on authorities there to take steps to prevent such activities.
“The cyber attack in March compromised the e-mail systems of our most important democratic institution. We will always react to these types of intrusions,” Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Soereide said in a statement emailed to Reuters. ....

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The Biden administration on Tuesday detailed how it wants to fund efforts to counter a wave of massive hacks in the wake of this month’s Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack.

Five US agencies may have been hacked through Ivanti flaws


Ivanti said in a statement that it was working closely with CISA and cybersecurity experts to investigate and respond quickly to malicious activity that was identified on a very limited number of customer systems . Reuters
The US Department of Homeland Security has determined that flaws in Ivanti Inc’s products may have allowed hackers to breach at least five federal agencies.
The Department’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, known as CISA, has been working with organisations targeted through vulnerabilities in Ivanti’s Pulse Connect Secure products and required federal civilian agencies to run a tool designed to find them. ....
