The John Maddox prize is a joint initiative of the charity Sense about Science and the leading international scientific journal 
Nature. The Prize has been awarded annually since 2012 to researchers who have shown great courage and integrity in standing up for science and scientific reasoning against fierce opposition and hostility. Each year there is one or two winners, and an additional prize for an early career researcher.
The prize brings into the spotlight the difficulty faced by many who fight to share the results of research evidence, and inspires and encourages people the world over to do the same. In 2019 there were over 200 nominations from 38 countries. ....

After years criticism and scepticism from the medical industry, Australian neurologist Anne Abbott is gaining recognition for her research suggesting strokes can be prevented without surgical intervention. Instead of resorting to procedures such as carotid surgery and stents, Abbott says medication and lifestyle changes can play a significant role in reducing the risk of stroke due to the thickening of arteries, which can cause carotid stenosis and lead to blockages.
“For decades, it was standard practice to operate on people who have carotid stenosis – by cutting open an artery and removing the narrowing,” added Abbott. “More recently, carotid stenting was introduced, and this is even more dangerous than surgery. But my research a decade ago showed, in many cases, these procedures are unnecessary or cause net harm,” says Abbott. “Major improvements can simply be made by medical – as opposed to procedural – interventions, such ....

Winners announced: 2020 Nature Research Awards for Mentoring in Science Israel
Two awards that celebrate outstanding mentorship in science will be presented to three Israeli scientists. The first award for lifetime achievement in mentoring goes to Hanah Margalit, professor in the faculty of medicine at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The second award for mid-career mentoring achievement goes jointly to Neta Erez, professor at the Sakler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, and Tal Pupko, professor at The Shmunis School of Biomedicine and Cancer Research, Tel Aviv University. Each award includes a cash prize of US$10,000 (which will be shared by the joint winners), a certificate and a trophy. ....
