New York, NY, July 6, 2021 The U.S. Administration announced today it will extend and redesignate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Yemen, protecting the 1,500 TPS holders that arrived since 2015 when Yemen was first designated. The IRC welcomes the decision by the U.S. government to extend protection for Yemenis located in the US but calls on the Biden Administration to fulfill its commitment to create a permanent, sustainable pathway to safety in the U.S. for the vulnerable population of Yemenis who have lived in American communities for years. The conflict in Yemen, now entering its seventh year, has resulted in the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. According to the UN, more than 20 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. ....

Nadwa Al-Dawsari is a non-resident fellow at the Middle East Institute. Before joining the institute, she was the Yemen Country Director for Center for Civilians in Conflict, a Senior Non-resident Fellow at the Project on Middle East Democracy, and a founding Director of Partners Yemen, a local affiliate center of Partners Global.  Earlier in her career, she worked as a senior program manager at the National Democratic Institute in Yemen, managing elections monitoring and tribal conflicts programs.

“Making billions from arms exports which fuel the conflict while providing a small fraction of that in aid to Yemen is both immoral and incoherent.”  So thundered Oxfam’s Yemen Country Director, Muhsin Siddiquey after consulting figures from the Stockholm Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) showing that members of the G20 have exported over $17 billion worth of arms to Saudi Arabia since the Kingdom entered the conflict in Yemen.  “The world’s wealthiest nations cannot continue to put profits above the Yemeni people.”
