FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) The hiker who went missing at Yosemite National Park last week has been found dead.
The National Park Service says Alice Yu Xie was reported missing on January 15 after she was planning to hike to the top of Yosemite Falls.
Xie was found dead at the base of Upper Yosemite Fall on Saturday, January 16.
Park officials say she was a 41-year-old who went to Yosemite from Mariposa on the YARTS bus.
The woman s cause of death has not been released. ....

Mariposa County, most famously a gateway into Yosemite National Park, is on the verge of being declared a disaster area after a powerful windstorm left behind a path of destruction with homes split in two by fallen trees and roads covered in fallen power lines and debris.
The county board of supervisors voted in favor of a proclamation Friday, 5-0, declaring a local emergency and requesting state and federal funds to assist with the recovery effort. Now it s in California Gov. Newsom s hands to ratify the declaration. ....

LOS ANGELES As a child, Sammy Potter asked his mother for an unusual birthday present: to go on a hike.
Now, Potter is getting more than he imagined an anticipated nine-month trek with his best friend along three of America’s most arduous trails: the Appalachian, Pacific Crest and Continental Divide.
Potter and Jackson Parell, both students at Stanford University, embarked on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia on New Year’s Day, taking the first steps on a nearly 7,940-mile journey to become the youngest known hikers to finish the ambitious trek dubbed the Calendar Year Triple Crown. ....

Wind gusts of more than 100 miles per hour sounded like an angry animal to one resident. Another said it was so windy he couldn t breathe.

The winds also led to the closure of Yosemite National Park.
Caltrans blocked Highway 41 on the way to Yosemite because windy conditions made it too dangerous even if crews could ve cleaned up all the trees already knocked over.
The park is expected to remain closed until Friday morning.
Yosemite will likely remain closed until Friday morning as the park conducts damage assessments, repairs facilities, and clears trees. While some facilities have been damaged, no injuries have been reported as a result of the high winds in the park. ....
