Today, President Biden issued a new Executive Order imposing new tough sanctions on Russia for its interference in the U.S. 2020 presidential election, as well as the SolarWinds cyber-attack that impacted multiple U.S. government agencies. This action was taken a day after Secretary of State Blinken stated strong concerns about the increase in Russian troops along the Ukrainian border. US names 6 Russian tech firms aiding govt hackers


The Biden administration issued sanctions against six Russian technology companies for helping the country’s intelligence agencies carry out malicious cyber activities including the SolarWinds hack.
The private and state-owned companies were accused Thursday by the U.S. Department of the Treasury of enabling the Russian Intelligence Services’ cyber activities. The six companies support the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), Main Intelligence Directive (GRU) and Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) by providing expertise, developing tools and infrastructure, and facilitating malicious cyberattacks.

The United States on Thursday imposed sanctions against Russia and expelled 10 diplomats in response to Moscow s alleged election interference and cyber activities.
The White House said in a statement that President Joe Biden had signed a new sanctions executive order against Russia.
According to the order, the U.S. Department of the Treasury issued a directive that prohibits U.S. financial institutions from participation in the primary market for ruble or non-ruble denominated bonds issued after June 14, 2021, by Russia s central bank, the national wealth fund, or finance ministry. ....

Treasury Sanctions Russia with Sweeping New Sanctions Authority | U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Russia

WASHINGTON Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury took multiple sanctions actions under a new Executive Order (E.O.) targeting aggressive and harmful activities by the Government of the Russian Federation.  Treasury’s actions include the implementation of new prohibitions on certain dealings in Russian sovereign debt, as well as targeted sanctions on technology companies that support the Russian Intelligence Services’ efforts to carry out malicious cyber activities against the United States.
“The President signed this sweeping new authority to confront Russia’s continued and growing malign behavior,” said Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen.  “Treasury is leveraging this new authority to impose costs on the Russian government for its unacceptable conduct, including by limiting Russia’s ability to finance its activities and by targeting Russia’s malicious and disruptive cyber capabilities.” ....
