The Stand, CBS All Access’ new adaptation of Stephen King’s post-apocalyptic epic, begins not with the escape of the plague that serves as the novel’s inciting incident, but its aftermath. Maggot-strewn bodies, necks bloated like bullfrogs, slumped in church pews, will be jarring enough for fans of the book (or Mick Garris’ faithful 1994 miniseries). They’ve been there for weeks, and survivors, clad in gas masks and ponchos, have arrived to clean up the mess.
