The Stand: How the Series Finale Compares to Stephen King's Book

The Stand arrived on Thursday with "The Circle Closes", a "coda" to the iconic story written by King himself. The episode was billed as being a new ending to the saga, a version of the story that King had been wanting to tell for three decades so, even going into things fans expected a unique experience. However, with a few details of the main story left after last week's "The Stand", there are still enough elements of the novel to compare to how they're approached in the episode -- and the overall ending requires a little bit of explanation as well for what it changes and does not change from King's classic. Let's break it down.

Spoilers for ‘The Stand’ finale
In episode 8 of CBS All Access' adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘The Stand’, Larry (Jovan Adepo), Ray (Irene Bedard), and Glen (Greg Kinnear) are subjected to an unruly kangaroo court. The trial that is broadcast all over Vegas sees Glen try to appeal to Lloyd Henreid (Nat Wolff) and all those watching that they may still have a chance to redeem themselves from their evil ways. As Glen’s words begin to have an effect on the people, Lloyd shoots and kills him.
Following the trial, Nadine Cross (Amber Heard) meets with a captive Larry alone. Last we saw her, Nadine was very pregnant, and reduced to a frail pale demeanor because of Flagg’s seed. When Larry forces Nadine to see her reflection the shock induces labor. But as Nadine realizes what she has become and how unholy their child would be, she flings herself from the penthouse, killing both her and the child.

But as Nadine realizes what she has become and how unholy their child would be, she flings herself from the penthouse, killing both her and the child. This again is slightly different from what happens in the book where, in her final moments, Nadine prophetically tells Flagg that four men from Boulder would come and destroy him. Flagg subsequently loses his temper and hurls her from the penthouse balcony, killing her.

A selective critical checklist of notable Thursday TV:
Fast Foodies (10:30/9:30c, truTV): Among the tests of a true master chef: the ability to tailor their gifts for crowd-pleasing guilty pleasures. On this new comedy-driven series, having a deep-dish sense of humor is also essential.
Fast Foodies, challenging two former
Top Chef winners (Kristen Kish and Jeremy Ford) and an
Iron Chef winner (Justin Sutherland) to recreate his favorite Chicago-style hot dog from Portillo’s chain eateries. It’s no exaggeration to say McHale tackles this judging with relish, as the chefs first strive to recreate the dish as accurately as possible. In the second round, they refine and remix the ingredients to transform this “junk” food into something they might serve in their own upscale restaurants. Whoever McHale declares the winner gets a “Chompionship” trophy, and the losers are subjected to a silly comeuppance.

Spoilers for ‘The Stand’ Episode 7 ‘The Walk’
Episode 7 of the CBS All Access limited series saw two crucial things happen. One, at Mother Abagail’s (Whoopi Goldberg) dying behest, Stu (James Marsden), Larry (Jovan Adepo), Ray (Irene Bedard) and Glen (Greg Kinnear) set off on foot towards Vegas to confront Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgård). Two, after the explosion, Harold (Owen Teague) and Nadine (Amber Heard) flee the Boulder Free Zone.
Nadine and Harold escape on bikes, and up ahead on the highway, the inevitable happens. As a corner comes up, Nadine screeches to a halt. But Harold doesn’t hit the brake in time. His bike crashes. He goes flying off the edge. And finally, he is impaled onto a tree. As in the book, Nadine tells him how Flagg would have never let him live and that the kinder way would be to kill himself. She then leaves. After writing a note in his journal, Harold does just that, bringing his saga to an end. Not long after, the four find Harold’s body.

Spoilers for ‘The Stand’ Episode 7, ‘The Walk’
Just past the mid-mark, episode 6 of CBS All Access limited series based on the Stephen King book of the same name saw an important plotline play out. Harold (Owen Teague) and Nadine (Amber Heard) caused an explosion at Boulder even as the citizens of the settlement waited for Mother Abagail (Whoopi Goldberg) to return from her brief self-imposed exile. From what is visible, the explosion killed Nick (Henry Zaga). We also saw the bodies of Stu (James Marsden) and Frannie (Odessa Young) fall from the impact.

The Stand: "The Walk" Photos Released
CBS All Access has released new photos from "The Walk", the upcoming seventh episode of the nine-episode
The Stand limited series. The episode will debut on the streaming platform on January 28th. In last week's "The Vigil", Nadine (Amber Heard) and Harold (Owen Teague) carry out their plan to kill the Boulder Free Zone committee with a bomb and while they don't manage to kill everyone -- of the committee members only Nick (Henry Zaga) is killed -- it's enough to set things into motion towards the ultimate showdown.
Fans of Stephen King's novel know that at this point in the story, Mother Abagail (played in the series by Whoopi Goldberg) instructs Larry (Jovan Adepo), Stu (James Marsden), Glen (Greg Kinnear), and Ray (Irene Bedard) to walk to Vegas. This is also around the time in the story when Nadine heads off to meet her fate with Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgard). Heard recently spoke with ComicBook.com about Nadine's journey through the series and about how she is one of the best female roles she's ever encountered because of her complexity.

CBS' The Stand is a Hell of a Mixed Bag | TV/Streaming

“Do you think he’s still alive?” a man asks a new friend. Then he clarifies: “The Rock?” The pair look down at what the man holds: a copy of, of all things, “Skyscraper.” It’s both punchline and lament, one moment among many in which the characters of “The Stand” confront their new reality. Is The Rock still alive? Probably not. Like 99 percent of humanity, it’s likely that he succumbed to the virus known colloquially as Captain Trips, a government-developed superflu inadvertently unleashed upon the world by a scared man who just wants to keep his wife and kid safe. And as a moment of drama, it’s an unlikely high point in Josh Boone and Benjamin Cavell’s adaptation of Stephen King’s seminal dark fantasy novel. The world ends, and that’s a wrap on The Rock as we understand him; all our old institutions of wealth, fame, and power have crumbled. It’s surreal and sad, a punchline and a moment of grief in one, and then it passes, and it’s time to get back to work hauling corpses.

'The Stand': TV Review | Hollywood Reporter

12/17/2020
CBS All Access caps off our COVID-dominated 2020 with the premiere of a new miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's post-pandemic allegory about good and evil.
On the page, Stephen King's
The Stand (1978) is a study in horrifying momentum. It's so propulsive that King was able to add hundreds of pages 12 years after its original publication without sacrificing the celerity of a narrative that keeps moving from one climax — a burgeoning plague, humanity mobilizing in Boulder, the final stand — to another. It's generally clear, and it's always churning along.
CBS All Access' new adaptation of
The Stand is a car on cinderblocks. It looks great. If you glance under the hood, you can see all of the work that's been done on the engine. But no matter how ready it seems to peel out onto the road, it isn't going anywhere. Very rarely is the Benjamin Cavell-steered adaptation, with Josh Boone directing the pilot, actively bad, but it's very frustrating.
