Chris Reed: Progressives who praise Cuba ignore its ugly history on race, gays

Print
The emergence of the first mass protests in more than 60 years in Cuba over endemic poverty and a botched response to the COVID-19 pandemic led rather predictably to a wave of support for the Havana regime from some on the political left. The fact that Cuba has free if often mediocre health care buys it goodwill among the many frustrated with the U.S. health system. So does the fact that the 1959 revolution that brought the communist government to power was seen as a triumph over avaricious American quasi-colonialism in the Caribbean and Latin America. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, and Nikole Hannah-Jones, The New York Times Magazine journalist who created the 1619 Project, have long admired what they see as Cuba’s relative social equality. ....

The Left's Romance With Cuba's Archipelago

The Biden administration s clear hostility toward the Cuban people is part of a long progressive tradition.
Fri Jul 16, 2021
Editors’ note: As we witness the Cuban people taking to the streets to confront the barbaric communist regime that has tortured them for decades, we witness the leftist Biden administration and leftist groups such as Black Lives Matter signal support for Cuba s Stalinist tyranny and engage in a callous disregard for the Cuban people. It s no surprise, for instance, that the Biden administration just issued a statement telling Cubans they are not welcome in United States, while illegal aliens are, of course, most welcome. ....

The Prophet of Dystopia at Rest: Margaret Atwood in Cuba

~Margaret Atwood,
The Handmaid’s Tale
As a Cuba scholar, a student of literature and politics, and an enthusiastic reader of Margaret Atwood’s work, I have collected articles and media clips over the years related to the Grande Dame of CanLit’s many private and official visits to Cuba. Frankly, the file is thin. Generally, scholars engage with her important body of work (more than 60 books, fiction and non-fiction), without mentioning this topic. It is an interesting footnote, no more. Why interesting? Because it illustrates, in her case and as a pattern, how an inquiring mind sincerely committed to human rights and democratic values can turn off its critical antennae. Atwood allowed herself to become a compliant guest in a country that checks almost all the boxes of totalitarianism, minus extensive terror: a single-party state, no rule of law, arbitrary arrests (2,000 of them during the first eight months of last year), stultifying media (even Raúl Castro says so) ....
