The hiring of the former head of Batavia schools in Genesee County ended a 14-month process that included an initial search that failed to reach terms with the selected candidate, but ended with the right leader, according to outgoing board president John Foley. “It is clear to all of us on the board that Mr. Soler possesses the characteristics that our community is seeking,” said Cathy Lewis, vice president of the board, at a press conference at the district’s Sayles School of Fine Arts before the meeting. “He is passionate about education and is experienced in urban education. He is an advocate for equity and recognizes the vital need for strong and rigorous curriculum. He has experience and success collaborating with students, families and community.”

Since Democratic County Executive Adam Bello took office in January 2020, two different power struggles have been playing out in the Legislature, where Republicans hold a one-seat majority over Democrats. Rifts in the local Democratic Party over the selection of an elections commissioner and other matters led four Democratic legislators to break away from their colleagues and form the Black and Asian Democratic Caucus.

Mayoral candidate Malik Evans is proposing several policies that would, if enacted, address the need for youth development and peer mediation programs, as well as bolster support for the Teen Court program. The proposals, named the Youth Opportunity Agenda, were the first that Evans has unveiled as part of his primary campaign against Mayor Lovely Warren. He announced them Thursday at a news conference at the Douglass Auditorium on King Street. Evans called his plan a “compact with the community,” and he emphasized the importance of creating programs that help connect students with employment opportunities. He believes if students are kept busy, they will not have time to become involved in drugs or violence.
