(Lanka-e-News -11.March.2021, 5.20AM) W.J. Basil Fernando is a Sri Lankan jurist, author, poet, human rights activist, editor of Article 2 and Ethics in Action, and a prolific writer. He was educated at St. Anthony s College, Wattala and St. Benedict s College, Kotahena. He earned a LLB from the University of Ceylon in 1972, registered as an Attorney-At-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in 1980 and practised law in Sri Lanka up to the end of 1989. He became a legal adviser to Vietnamese refugees in a UNHCR-sponsored project in Hong Kong. He joined the United Nations Transitional Authority (UNTAC) in 1992 as a senior human rights officer and later also served as the Chief of Legal Assistance to Cambodia of the UN Centre of Human Rights (now the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights office). (Lanka-e-News -10.March.2021, 4.15AM) The current government is deliberately covering up the Easter Sunday attacks on April 21, 2019, the deadliest massacre in Sri Lanka in the last decade.  Meanwhile, both the respondents and the plaintiffs are attacking the dilemma report of the Presidential Commission appointed to investigate the Easter attack.

China approves $1.5 billion currency swap with Sri Lanka

COLOMBO (Reuters) - China has approved a 10 billion yuan ($1.54 billion) currency swap with Sri Lanka, a government spokesman in Colombo said on Wednesday, giving some respite from concerns about public finances.

The deal will allow the island to weather “present difficulties”, State Minister of Money & Capital Market and State Enterprise Reforms Ajith Nivard Cabraal said in an interview with the Daily Mirror earlier on Wednesday.
Sri Lanka’s government bonds surged after the announcement, with Sri Lanka’s dollar-denominated bond due in July 2021 climbing 3.5 cents to 96.3 cents and its highest level since March 2020. The January 2022 issue jumped 4.8 cents, Tradeweb data showed. ....
