–Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the selection of California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to be California’s next United States Senator, filling the term being vacated by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Padilla, who previously served as a Los Angeles City Councilman and State Senator, and is a national leader in the fight to expand voting rights, will become the first Latino to represent California in the United States Senate and the first Southern Californian in nearly three decades.

Gov. Gavin Newsom made two major appointments Tuesday, promoting diverse elected officials and reshaping state politics for years to come. 
First, after months of speculation and fierce lobbying, he named Secretary of State Alex Padilla to the U.S. Senate seat soon to be vacated by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. 
Hours later, Newsom announced Assemblywoman Shirley Weber would, if approved by the Legislature, fill Padilla’s post as Secretary of State and become the first African-American in the job. ....

Biden plans to pick Miguel Cardona, a former teacher, to lead the Department of Education

President-elect Joe Biden is expected to pick Miguel Cardona, Connecticut’s commissioner of public education,
to be his Department of Education secretary, according to multiplesources. With his nomination, Biden will fulfill his promise to select a public school educator to head the department and further his goal of creating the most diverse cabinet in American history.
Cardona began his career in Meriden, Connecticut, as an elementary school teacher who rose quickly to become a school principal and eventually the state’s first Latino commissioner of education. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus has urged Biden to nominate Cardona, writing that his “record of accomplishments demonstrates that he is capable and qualified to lead,” as well as noting that as “a Puerto Rican leader, he will bring a valued and diverse voice to the Cabinet.” ....
