Lincoln considers steps to avoid flooding

Lincoln considers steps to avoid flooding

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln’s defenses against Salt Creek flooding will face a stiffer test against heavier rains in the future, a study commissioned by the city found.
The city installed the Salt Creek levee system in the 1960s to withstand a 50-year flood, or a flow that has a 2% annual chance of occurring, the study said.
Since then, the city has had three floods equal to or exceeding a 50-year flood level and one, in May 2015, that exceeded the 100-year flood level.
“It’s protected us pretty well so far,” Lincoln’s Assistant Director for Utilities Donna Garden told the Lincoln Journal Star in an interview last week.

Around 35,000 Aviators are having issues with their rearview cameras not working properly.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
Reverse cameras are an extremely useful safety feature, which is why they're mandated on all new vehicles. Unfortunately, if you drive a 2020 or 2021 Lincoln Aviator, yours may not be working correctly.
Specifically, there's an issue with the image processing module that could make the rearview camera shut off intermittently while reversing. Lincoln's parent company Fordannounced a recall on Friday for the 34,975 vehicles affected by this issue.

Six ways to celebrate the warm spring weather in Lincoln

The snow is melted, the flowers are blooming and the dreary days of winter are finally in the rearview mirror. The campus is feeling alive again as people venture out in shorts to see what the sunny, 80-degree weather may bring. So grab your sunglasses and throw on some flip-flops. Here are six ways to enjoy the warm spring weather in Lincoln.
Have a projector movie night
Bring some yummy snacks and enjoy the warm weather while screening your favorite flick. You can use lawn chairs or a blanket for seating and rent a portable projector from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Library. Any outdoor wall will be a suitable substitute for a screen. Given the current times, this activity even provides a safe way to hang out with friends outdoors while socially distanced.

While barn finds and project cars are typically easy ways to buy classics at lower prices, especially if they’re not necessarily in their best shape, others prefer to go for estate sales, though this approach comes with a series of pros and cons.

While the vehicles sold as part of an estate liquidation process typically go very cheap, they most often come with very few details, so you don’t know exactly what you’re buying.
Someone on Craigslist, for example, is selling a lineup of several Ford Thunderbirds and Lincoln Continentals, all as part of an estate sale in Ellicott, Colorado.

PERCENT. ALL RIGHT. NO ONE HAS EVER PICKED A PERFECT MARCH MADNESS BRACKET AND THAT HASN’T CHANGED THIS TOURNAMENT BUT A GROUP OF UNL STUDENTS FOLLOWED THEIR PROFESSORS GAME PLAN TO LET A COMPUTER ALGORITHM PICK THE WINNERS. IT’S KETV NEWSWATCH EVANS, JOSE. ZOZAYA SHOWS US THEIR BRACKETS ARE HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE ALMOST EVERYONE ELSE. ONE IN NINE POINT TWO QUINTILLIONS. THOSE ARE THE ODDS YOU PICK A PERFECT NCAA MEN’S TOURNAMENT BRACKET GUESSING EACH OF THE 63 GAMES A LITTLE BIT OF FUN. NEVER HEARD ANYBODY. SO INSTEAD OF MAKING PICKS BLINDLY JOURNALISM PROFESSOR. MATT WAITE ASKED HIS SPORTS DATA STUDENTS TO APPLY THEIR LESSONS AND TAKE THEIR BEST SHOT. WE WERE WORKING THROUGH MACHINE LEARNING ALGORITHMS TO PREDICT THINGS AND IT JUST HAPPENED. INSIDE WITH THE START OF THE TOURNAMENT YOU’RE PRESENTED WITH A PROBABILITY THAT A TEAM IS GOING TO WIN OR LOSE AND YOU CAN MAKE DECISIONS BASED OFF THAT TAKING THAT RAW DATA WEIGHT SAYS STUDENTS CAN PICK WHICH ALGORITHM THEY WANT TO USE AND TRAIN IT TO PREDICT FUTURE OUTCOMES, BUT SOME THINGS IN CLASS AND ON THE COURT, YOU JUST CAN’T SEE COMING. I DID NOT PREDICT THAT WE WOULD HAVE FIVE STUDENTS BETTER THAN 90% OF BRACKET ON ESPN’S TOURNAMENT. IT LIVES UP TO THE NAME, MARCH MADNESS WHO WOULD HAVE PICKED SOME OF THE LOWER SEEDS AND ALL THE UPSETS. YOU’VE SEEN THIS YEAR JUNIOR THOMAS BAKER FOLLOWS PLAYERS AND TEAMS CLOSELY. HE SAYS HIS MODEL ACTUALLY HELPED HIM SINCE A FEW OF THE UPSETS AND PUT HIM AND FIRST PLACE AMONG THE CLASS. IT ACTUALLY ALSO HAD OREGON OVER IOWA, WHICH I WAS VERY EXCITED. I LISTENED TO THE MODEL 100% WHEN THEY SAID I WAS GONNA LOSE OTHERS LIKE SENIOR CAITLIN JOHNSON WENT INTO THIS EXPERIMENT WITHOUT MUCH. KNOW HOW BUT ARMED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF PICKING RELIABLE METRICS. SHE’S NOW IN FOURTH PLACE. WELL, I GUESS I TO LOOK AT LIKE ROLLING MEANS FOR POSSESSIONS AND FOR POINTS PER POSSESSION, AND I HAD TO LOOK AT THE PREVIOUS SIX GAMES. WAIT SAYS HE HOPES THESE SKILLS WILL HELP STUDENTS FIND INFORMATION THAT IMPACTS COMMUNITIES AND IF YOU WANT TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE WORLD WORKS IF YOU WANT TO UNDERSTAND HOW YOU KNOW, THEN IS WORKING OR HOW SOCIETY IS FUNCTIONING. YOU NEED TO KNOW H

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (AP) — A replica statue of Abraham Lincoln in Kentucky has been moved to a permanent home at a Civil War battlefield.
Floyd County Judge-Executive Robert Williams told WYMT-TV that the statue is now at the Middle Creek Battlefield in Prestonsburg. The site is where Union forces halted a Confederate advance into Kentucky in 1862.
The statue depicting the president seated is a replica of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. It was removed in 2019 from the law office of Eric C. Conn, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the largest Social Security fraud in history. Conn fled the country but was caught in Honduras and sentenced to an additional 15 years.

MISSOULA — There are lots of documentaries, true crime podcasts and programs about the Unabomber but a new movie that just premiered at a prestigious film festival in Berlin explores Ted Kaczynski's life in Lincoln before anyone discovered what he was up to in that tiny cabin.
It's a movie filmed in Montana with a lot of local talent that tells the story in a new way. The first clip of the movie Ted K shows a nervous Ted Kaczynski accepting a ride from a neighbor. He looks uncomfortable as the neighbor teases him about a broken seatbelt.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The spearhead in the battle to gain statutory approval in Nebraska for the use of medical marijuana to help tame or alleviate suffering is a Lincoln senator who is guided by medical science and prompted by personal empathy.
Anna Wishart, the senator who went looking in the rain for the missing Capitol cat named Cameron, that spunky little feline who attracted a community’s attention earlier this month, has a deep well of energy and enthusiasm coupled with determination.
Wishart, who represents a diverse Lincoln legislative district, has a horse named Bubba and dogs named Scout and Finn.

It was three years ago when Ford revived an older nameplate in the Lincoln portfolio, the Aviator. Built as a three-row luxury SUV, the model is packed with technology that, as technology usually goes, is prone to failure from time to time.

On Friday, April 2, the American carmaker announced it would have to call in for repairs a little over 35,000 Aviators sold in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico since the new model was launched, on account of an issue with the SUVs rearview camera system.
More precisely, the Blue Oval found that the image processing module used in the system may at times be unable to provide a video feed to the display screen.
