Time Travel: Would it really change your story?

Time Travel: Would it really change your story?
With the first year of lockdowns in South Africa behind us, many are dealing with grief on some level. Whether it’s time with loved ones, financial losses, a lost job or the ultimate tragedy of losing someone to Covid-19… each one of us has faced loss. Hindsight has been useful in teaching us about what we should have held dear, but it can also be painful. Looking back, it may seem obvious – we should have seen these setbacks coming. One could spend hours analysing what one should have done before the pandemic struck, travelling back in time to unpick mistakes. The more productive thing to do, even in the anger and regret of grief is to shift perspectives, look at events from a different angle. Accept that the unknown will eventually become your past and shape who and where you are. This article first appeared on FirstRand Perspectives. – Melani Nathan ....

New Bedford: WHALE explains Abandoned Housing Initiative

NEW BEDFORD  The Waterfront Historic Area LeaguE, also known as WHALE, hosted a virtual community conversation on its Neighborhood Revitalization Program Wednesday night. Teri Bernert, executive director, said the meeting was a response, in part, to protests last summer against the auctioning of a property they are restoring.
It kind of showed to us that our work does revitalize neighborhoods, but there s not a good understanding of the program and what it does, Bernert said.  We need to do better community outreach. maybe we haven’t been doing enough of that because we’re too busy restoring the properties, but that s no excuse. ....

British Consulate General tours historic house in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD  As part of Black History Month, British Consul General in Boston, Dr. Peter Abbott, OBE, traveled to New Bedford s Nathan and Polly Johnson House to highlight American abolitionist and statesman Frederick Douglass and his connections to the U.K.
“We enjoy the opportunity to talk about (Frederick) Douglass, and talk about his impact in England and Ireland,” said New Bedford Historical Society President Lee Blake on Thursday. She welcomed Abbott and state Senator Mark C. Montigny into the historic house, while live on the British Consulate Boston’s official Twitter.
“People need to know these stories,” she said. Blake has significant ties to New Bedford not only as a former high school African American Studies teacher but, as she pointed out, the “great-great-great-great-great granddaughter” of the Whaling City’s William and Amelia Piper. In the mid 1800s, the Pipers were members of the abolitionist movement and the Underground Railroad. ....
