.-Logan Center Exhibitions at the University of Chicago is presenting Carrie Mae Weems: A Land of Broken Dreams in partnership with the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago as part of the multi-site exhibition Toward Common Cause: Art, Social Change, and the MacArthur Fellows Program at 40.
On view July 17–December 12, 2021, Carrie Mae Weems: A Land of Broken Dreams features an array of media and objects—photography, video, texts, bric-a-brac, and furniture—through which Weems reimagines the Black Panther Party’s programs for young people in Chicago during the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the main gallery, visitors are invited to browse, sit, and explore a classroom setting replete with desks, chairs, books, a blackboard, View-Masters, and posters of historic Black leaders. .-Fraenkel Gallery is presenting an exhibition of 45 photographs by Diane Arbus, curated by acclaimed contemporary artist Carrie Mae Weems. A long-time admirer of Arbus s work, Weems has selected images spanning Arbus s fifteen-year career, from 1956 until her death in 1971. The exhibition is on view at 49 Geary Street from June 3 to August 13, 2021, and will be followed by an exhibition devoted to Weems’s own work in September.
Weems has cited Arbus, along with David Hammons, as artists of paramount importance to her. To inaugurate Fraenkel Gallery’s recently announced representation of Weems, the artist was invited to curate an exhibition of Arbus’s photographs, the sole directive being to focus on works that speak powerfully and directly to her. ....

.-Fraenkel Gallery announced its representation of Carrie Mae Weems, whose groundbreaking work spanning photography, installation, video, and performance has expanded contemporary discourse for more than four decades. The gallery will work in collaboration with Jack Shainman in New York; Weems’s relationship with Shainman and with Galerie Barbara Thumm in Berlin continues. In September 2021 Fraenkel Gallery will present an exhibition surveying Weems’s career.
Since the 1980s, Weems’s work has been seen around the world, and she has inspired a generation of artists with her poetic and original approach to storytelling. Her photographs and video projects explore history, identity, and power, giving voice to people whose stories have been silenc ....
