Red tide reported at multiple Lee County beaches Published: May 14, 2021 4:04 PM EDT Florida Department of Health in Lee County (DOH-Lee) reported Friday red tide blooms near Tarpon Bay Road Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Lynn Hall Beach Park, Lover’s Key State Park and Bonita Springs Beach Park. According to the health department, “Some people may have mild and short-lived respiratory symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation similar to cold symptoms. Some individuals with breathing problems such as asthma might experience more severe symptoms. Usually symptoms go away when a person leaves the area or goes indoors. Health officials recommend that people experiencing these symptoms stay away from beach areas or go into an air-conditioned space. If symptoms do not subside, please contact your health care provider for evaluation.”
Updated: 9:48 AM CDT May 11, 2021 KMBC 9 News Staff Wichita, Kansas, resident Cris Boyle said she couldn't believe her eyes Monday when she got a notification from her home security camera showing a large animal running down the back of her alley."I played it, and I had to look at it and think to myself, ‘Is it in my alley? Because it was a mountain lion running down the back of the alley,’" Boyle told ABC affiliate KAKE-TV in Wichita.Sure enough, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism confirmed what Boyle and numerous others saw Monday in Wichita was indeed a mountain lion.Kansas Department of Wildlife Research biologist Matt Peek told KAKE-TV this is the 36th confirmed sighting of a mountain lion in Kansas and the first in a city within the state."I don't think there's any doubt that this is a mountain lion,” Peek told KAKE-TV. “And it helps there's a domestic cat that jumps out. So, you really get a good size comparison of how much bigger the cougar is than the domestic cat.“In this case where it's in the city, we also wanted to notify the local police department and make sure that they're aware, so that if somebody does call up and say, you know, ‘There's a mountain lion in the tree in my yard,’ that they take it seriously because it is possible."Boyle said she’s not scared that there is a mountain lion in her Wichita neighborhood."The odds are astronomical that would have ever happened or would ever happen again,” she told KAKE-TV. “I'm just, rather than afraid, I'm grateful. I'm grateful that we got that experience because how many people can say, ‘Hey, guess what was in my alley last night?’"The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism says mountain lion attacks on humans are rare, but it's still best to steer clear. If you do come in close contact, experts say it's best to use whatever you can, such as holding up a jacket, to make yourself seem bigger and make noise to try to scare it away. The state Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism says if it does attack you, unlike bear attacks, you want to use whatever you can to fight back. There have been numerous unconfirmed reports across the region, including earlier in 2019 in Gladstone, Missouri. The KDWPT said in late 2020 it spotted a rare mountain lion on a trail camera located in southwestern Kansas. The department shared a photo on its Facebook page, saying the big cat was found on camera is Kiowa County, which is located southeast of Dodge City and west of Pratt, Kansas. The department said in the photo the mountain lion is carrying a recently killed porcupine in its mouth.
