Jason Fischer was shocked at what his crew had just caught.
Fischer, a biologist who works with a Michigan-based Fish and Wildlife Service office, was on the water late last month, putting out setlines with hooks to catch and survey the lake sturgeon population in the Detroit River. It was his first setline survey with this three-person crew, and until then his research had focused on egg and larval stages “we’re talking about a fish less than an inch.” ....

(CNN) Scientists were in for a shock when they encountered a “real-life river monster” a giant fish believed to be more than 100 years old.
Staff from the Alpena Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office caught the fish a female lake sturgeon measuring 6′ 10″ and weighing a whopping 240 pounds in the Detroit River in April.
Experts think the fish is one of the largest lake sturgeon ever recorded in the US, and based on the creature’s girth and size, they said it is assumed to be female and more than 100 years old. ....

Huge sturgeon pulled from Detroit River among largest ever caught; over 100 years old

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service made the announcement on its Facebook page.
âThis real life river monster was tipping the scales at 240 pounds, measuring 6 feet 10 inches long, and a girth of nearly 4 feet,â the post stated. âCaught in the Detroit River, this fish is one of the largest lake sturgeon ever recorded in the U.S.â

Based on its girth and size, biologists assume it to be a female and said she has been roaming the Detroit River and surrounding waters for over 100 years.
As a point of reference, that means the ancient fish caught on April 22 likely was hatched in the Detroit River around 1920, when Detroit became the fourth largest city in America. ....
