WASHINGTON — What does a wave of legislation targeting transgender children in state houses across the country have in common with the recent furor among Republicans over “cancel culture” and Dr. Seuss?
More than you might think — at least according to LGBTQ rights’ advocates, who are working to fend off the bills.
They argue that Republicans are targeting transgender youth now as a way to score political points with a segment of their base at a time when the party is out of power at the federal level and squabbling over some of the fundamental policies that used to unite them — from fiscal conservatism ....

Florida House Passes HB 1475, a Transgender Athlete Ban


If a competitor or someone else calls an athlete s sex into question, that student must submit to a genetic test, a testosterone level test, or an examination of their reproductive anatomy by a healthcare provider and submit a statement from that provider to the school, according to the bill language.
The legislation also allows any student who feels a transgender girl has deprived them of an athletic opportunity to sue their school for damages, including for any psychological, emotional, or physical harm suffered.
The bills come amid a wave of legislation targeting transgender athletes introduced by conservatives in Florida and across the U.S. Supporters of those laws argue that transgender girls have an unfair advantage in sports and that cisgender girls are losing athletic opportunities owing to competition from transgender athletes. ....

Alarm grows over impact of states banning trans youth treatment

Medical experts and LGBT advocates are sounding the alarm over the physical and mental health risks to the transgender community after at least 19 state legislatures, including Arkansas, have proposed or passed bills seeking to ban trans youth treatment. 
Proponents of the bills have argued that the legislation is in place to protect children from making irreversible decisions about their bodies. 
But earlier this week, doctors and LGBT organizations defended treatments such as puberty blockers and hormone therapy, and warned about a potential increased suicide rate among trans youth if such legislation is enacted. ....
