The Intense Drama of My Early 2000s Ewan McGregor Yahoo Group Twitter In honor of the 20th anniversary of Baz Luhrmann’s masterpiece Moulin Rouge!, I want to take you back to 2001. I grew up in the middle of nowhere Northern California. And when I say “middle of nowhere,” I mean that my parents had to drive 100 miles into a town in Oregon just so I could be born because my hometown hospital was not equipped to perform C-sections. Like many youths, I struggled to connect my fellow teens. I just had nothing in common with the people I went to high school with. This is a much bigger problem in a town of 2,800 people where you’ve known the same 62 kids your entire life. Enter the internet. ....
How Baby Halder went from being a mother at 13 to a bestselling author at 40 true Forty-three-year-old Baby Halder has published three books, which have been translated into 24 languages and she frequently travels across the country to speak at literary festivals. What makes her story inspiring and significant is the struggle she went through to be where she is today. Brought up by an abusive father, she was pulled out of school and married off to a guy twice her age when she was 12 years old. Before even knowing what it really meant, she became a mother at the young age of 13. She had three children with her husband, before deciding to run away from his constant abuse. She ran away from West Bengal to Delhi and started working as a domestic help. Initially, she had to work for families that were looking for ways to exploit her. Talking about the plight of young domestic help, she told ....
Afterlife fantasies have always been a unique way to look at society. Since death is a fairly impenetrable wall, it gives us an opportunity to imagine all kinds of stuff on the other side. Visions of heavens and hells can be used as carrots and sticks to critique people while they’re still alive, hence Dante’s Divine Comedy, Faust’s terrifying trapdoor, and Jacob Marley’s chains. When I watched Pixar’s Soul, I was reminded of a couple of afterlife fantasies most immediately, Defending Your Life and A Matter of Life and Death. This got me thinking: is there a tradition to afterlife fantasies? Are there recurring themes or imagery? (tl;dr: YES, YES, and YES. That third “YES” is the surprising one, as I’ll discuss.) Wouldn’t it be fun to rewatch all these movies, and write about them? (tl;dr: SOMETIMES. I hope it’s fun to read?) And thus this miniseries was born, as I went back about a century and worked my way up through twelve (12) movies ....
From its opening shot, Trainspotting is a movie in motion. As sneakers hit the sidewalk of Princes Street in Edinburgh, Scotland, we hear the raucous drumbeat of Iggy Pop s 1977 barnstormer Lust For Life. Renton played by Ewan McGregor and Spud by Ewen Bremner sprint away from two security guards, their shoplifting spoils flying out of their pockets. Choose life, Renton s narration begins, introducing an instantly classic monologue about the emptiness of middle-class aspirations. The action then zips to a soccer match that introduces Renton s ragtag mates: Spud, Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), Begbie (Robert Carlyle) and Tommy (Kevin McKidd). The scene is all propulsion and attitude, with Iggy Pop dropping the match on the trail of fuel. In just 60 exhilarating seconds, ....
Where were you born and raised and what did your folks do for a living? I was born in London. My family is Jamaican. My mom was a nurse and was part of the influx of people from the Caribbean to England in the late 40s, 50s and 60s. I have no idea what my father did, bless his heart, aside from being himself, and that s a whole other conversation. You encountered a lot of racism in your early years in the U.K. In your teens, you and your mother moved to Canada and then the U.S. ....
